What is the best feed for my boy with LV ? (leucocytoclastic vasculitus)

He's currently on top spec and top spec conditioning cubes but it's VERY expensive to feed 2 on that!

All the things I'd normally feed seem to be no-nos eg molasses oil alfalfa etc etc

He young and big ( 3 1/2 yrs old and 15.3 now ) I want to back him soon but he drops condition when hes worked as it's all going into growing!!

Also I don't want loads of different feeds - so something that my other gelding can be fed would be a plus.

He's 16yrs old purebred and in full work, but cushionoid , generally a good doer but also a fussy eater. he has to have something palatable as he has to have meds every day in his feed.

Any suggestions ??

( I've contacted the feed companies and they range from - i don't know - to I'll get back to you! )

Thanks !

Feed him fibre with a broad vit and min supplement. Ring Baileys or Allen & Page or Dengie they WILL all help. You probably will have to feed them slightly different things but horse are supposed to eat grass which is fibre

He gets fed as much hay as he'll eat, and he's out at night on good grass( which will be hayledge in the winter)

I need to find something he can eat to keep his energy up for growth AND work.

I've phoned dengie, they've said their products arn't suitable and I'm still waiting for dodson and horrell to get back to me..

none of dengie's feeds are suitable...... really? My friend has a 3.5 year old filly 16.1 and still growing. she is doing fabulously well on very little mostly Dengie. We do have good grass though.

Pixie - the reason their feeds aren't suitable is that horses with LV are allergic to a whole range of things. I know, I've been there! Baileys are the same, as is TopSpec and most of D&H and A&P's ranges too. They all inlclude either molasses, alfalfa or soya, it's extremely difficult to find something without any of those three ingredients.

Phoenix, you might want to try:
> NAF's broad vitamin supplement, that doesn't contain anything bad for LV and has a good range of vits/mins
> Straight feeds, unmollassed beet, grass nuts, oats
> Flax oil, the best oil for horses with LV, you can get it from Global Herbs, or just ordinary vegetable oil (I'm using the ordinary one now and can't say that I've seen anything detrimental on the LV since starting it)

I can't remember about FastFibre, I looked at it and I think it was ok but I opted for ordinary unmollassed beet as it's cheaper.

Hope that helps! I know how it feels

Ok just off the top of my head here are some more companies you could try contacting:
Thorogoods
Simple Systems
Badminton
And im sure i remember some orgainc one somewhere too

Id imagine you will get the same response from most the conventional companies as ingredients are the same but Simple Systems are different, no experience of them personally but think a fair few people on here use it and they are arab people too.

Let us know how you get on.
