I know some will frown but I have been told that arab x New Forest can produce a wonderful mix of qualities of both breeds. I would love to know if anyone could suggest me a stallion of 15.1hh or under as a possible match for my New Forest Mare. I am looking into options at the moment so would look into breeding around 2yrs from now but would love some suggestions

You should look at the types you like yourself and see what area that you fill you could improve on your mare. You could look on the stallion pages on here and various other sites, Also look at studs and there youngstock as well. All this will help you decide what is suitable.
Dont be swayed by others, Only you can make your decision as to whether you are equiped and able to afford this.
Then start to look into cost and where and how you keep your mare at the moment and whether a foal would be able to be fitted in with this.
Good luck with your decision |

We have a high % Crabbett hombred boy who produces some super foals to cobs, highlands etc... go for it. Find a boy who strengthens the areas your mare needs improvement |

Bramble's only conformation fault is that she is slightly long backed, apparently this is quite common in New Forest mares, she is a lovely girl but a leg in each corner and a little plain so would love to have the cross to bring in a little more beauty but keep the good aspects.
I am looking on a if I do breed what would bring out the best in her and what would be suitable to breed to her, I would obviously weigh up costs and our situation before going into it further |

A good arab can cross well with most types! There are probably many thousands of very good ponies (pc/allrounders/showjumpers etc etc) that have a bit of arab blood crossed with natives. My boy (part bred arab though about 71% arab) has covered a new forest x mare this year. The mare's owner was also looking to add a bit more beauty/refinement while keeping the good leg at each corner stamp and lovely temperament of a new forest. We're both looking forward to next year to see what they produce together. |

I absolutely wouldn't frown, I have an arab x new forest and he is perfect in everyway. A brilliant cross, the best of everything.
In fact I was thinking of using Wayland Cranberry (New Forest) on my Arab mare, but decided there wasn't a vacancy for another riding horse in my life.
There are lots of good stallions about so take a look at their progeny to see if you think they will suit you. The funny thing about breeding (which I have never heard any one else mention) is that when you go to buy a horse you have an unlimited choice, when you breed the new arrival is your only choice. I took an enormous amount of trouble to try and breed a 15.2 bay and what arrived was a sizzling chestnut 14.3! I got the bay next time, but actually in personality the chestnut was a perfect match for me.
Are you going to Malvern, you could look through the part breds in the catalogue, see who is crossing well. |

keep in mind that a mare needs a bit more space back there for a reason, Still be positive & objective about your mare & what you might like to do with the eventual offspring, Crabbet & russian will as vjc suggests would give you some really nice qualities with good solid bone & some beauty from the russian.
Still I love that you've got a plan & will not rush in,
i reckon you could get something really versatile with your cross of New forest & Arabian.
here at home I have crosses of Arabian & welsh as my riding horses, their personalities are very hard to go past,
good luck & have you got pics of your mare??? oh & why would many of us frown I think you will find that many on here have Arabian Crosses..& those that do know their reasons for having them |

Here is His Highness.
The stallion - Indrani - was a very successful part bred sire. I saw a lovely part bred once at a show, jumping its socks off. I went up and spoke to the owner and it was by Indrani!
In the final photo he is attempting to jump me off (look how far the saddle is off his back) as I had ridden too strongly at the previous fence. My greatest riding critic Edited to say - he is 13.3 but rode much bigger.

She's super!
I was told that Queen Victoria was given a purebred Arab stallion that she decided to let loose in the New Forest and the ponies there now are descended from the stock from that stallion. That's why some of the New Forests just look like thoroughbreds; the native with that essential improvement of the Arab.
Your girl looks a very good, versatile type with a good temperament, and remember, you'll get 60 per cent of HER back in the foal - with 40 per cent of the stallion. |
