Hi, I would like to hear others views on a decision to make? I have won a family ticket to the Great Yorkshire show & we would all love to go BUT (2 buts!) weather forecast is awful & the main sticking point is my daughter Michelle has 3 transfer days. That is where they change from primary to secondary school. They get new timetables, find their way around the new school, meet new students etc. Do I take her out of school or not? I have asked her what she wants to do, & she wants to go the the show but I'm worried she misses out at the new school. The primary school she is leaving is a small village school with less than 6o pupils in the school so its a big change - any ideas anyone? Lisa

Mmmmmm, very difficult decision, but I would say "go to the show", a much better social experience and much more to see of the outside world IMO. Michelle's friends will show her around the school and help her out when she gets there, and I'm sure Michelle will enjoy the informal experience of a show as opposed to the formal introduction to a new school. I would also suggest you tell her that she needs to do some 'homework' whilst she is at the show, for example a short essay to read out to her fellow pupils about her 'day out'.
OK, I will now duck whilst the teachers on AL completely disagree!!!

As one who lost a chance to appear on the BBC aged 12 due to fairly irrelevant school 'stuff', I'd agree with Tahir - your daughter will probably get a lot more out of going to the show!

Well as a teacher at a big secondary school I would also say go to the show and have a fun day, the days they have at school are important in some ways but we manage with ours with 1/2 a day now a day in September and the kids who are away don't suffer, as said their friends just help them a bit. Anyway I was taken to the show when at secondary school and loved it, I'd have been gutted not to go, Michelle will love it Lisa and it's only water, I have to go to Flamingo Land Thursday I know where I'd rather go, anyway some stuff is indoor! Just my opinion! |
Regards, Sapphire

Wow thats 100% at the moment saying go for it! Michelle went to the show last year and we had an amazing day so its not as if shes never been before but I am worried about the changeover to new school? May wait to see if she gets a timetable today & how she feels when she comes home from school? Keep the suggestions coming please. Lisa |

I work about 3 miles from showground, weather been ok today hardly a shower at all, get yourselves gone, especially if you have won the tickets, silly not to use them. You'd not be questioning it if you'd won an all expenses paid trip to Florida for a fortnight would you? Plus if things carry on as they are with food/fuel prices, ongoing infectious diseases etc there may not be another one! |

If I were in your shoes I would go to the show, family bonding and great memories much more important than 'orientation'! She will do what most of us did and pick it up very quickly as she goes along, especially with help from her friends Hope you have a wonderful day.

Go to the show, Go to the show. When I was in my teens (oh gosh, joining you now TC) and lived in Harrogate we used to go to the show as a school trip. It was great. She'll settle in to Secondary school just fine. Hope yo have a lovely time. |

Well, we went to to the show yesterday (Wednesday), & had a fabulous day. Lorenzo was fabulous. He has a team of 8 horses and he stands on the back of them galloping around the ring. His balance was unbelievable, & drop dead gorgeous! The team were jumping & he even went faced backwards over the jump! Michelle & her friend absolutely loved it. Back to school today. Thanks for your suggestions. Oh yes, & the sun shone all day for us! Lisa |

thank you for your replies. I treated myself to the most beautiful bridle. Its hand-made rolled English leather, made by Treadstone.(I've never heard of the make before?) Can't wait to try it on Rosie tonight. I usually have a synthetic that I can just bung in the wash but this is for best! Lisa |
