I was on my way to buy some organic dog food from the pet shop the other day when I was pulled over by the police. "Sorry to pull you over so suddenly but you car is flashing up on my system as having no insurance.". "I am sorry," I said, "but I can assure you I DO have insurance." I had to get in the back of his police car on a very busy road, in front of a crowded bus stop. Fortunatley I have my insurance broker in my moblie phone so I rang them and they spoke to the policeman to comfirm I had insurance. The same broker insurse the policeman's dad! Someone somewhere hasn't put my details on a computer. Then the policeman starts to try and say why this happened so I started with a list of things I have insured (dog, horses, horsebox, Skybox.......My parting shot was, "May I leave now?" I couldn't even look at the policeman I was so mad.

So folks - that is why the police in this country should NEVER be armed. And why we can NEVER have the death penalty back. Computer says NO is not adequate policing. I am descent, honest, taxpayer and yet I am pulled over and made to feel like a criminal because his bloody computer said so. |

Had a similar thing a couple of years ago, my registration number wasnt listed on the police computer so they pulled me over, breathylised me, cautioned me and I had to present documents at the station. Bloody embarrassing I can tell you. I've had the number on my cars for years but they still had it listed on my old car from two years previous..........bloody jobsworths copper looked about 16, little sod nearly got a slap - then they would have something to do me for!
Then, to add insult to injury, my OH drove passed in the opposite direction - and did he come to my rescue - did he hell!
Grrrrrrrrr |

To be fair, its not the job of the police to enter the details, thats the job of your insurance company or your broker - is it not a good use of their time to pull over uninsured drivers or would you rather they ignored them...? How would you feel if you were hit by an uninsured driver???
I think you're being quite unfair! |

I was thinking the same thing M. It sounds to me like he was only doing his job. The person at fault is the insurers.
We should have never stopped the death penalty, for certain crimes involving children mostly.
Bring back hanging, gassing, lethal injection - let them choose.
And while I'm at it convicts should be subjected to hard labour, let them break rocks with pick axes. Prison is supposed to be punishment not a holiday camp.
Not meaning to go off on one but its something I feel quite strongly about.
Hope the dog has decided he should be grateful for the trouble you went through to get organic food! |

On the two occasions I have been physically attacked by men - once as a child and once as an adult the police were not there. Now I know where they were. I couldn't care less about being hit by an uninsured driver, that's only money at the end of the day - I care about my and my family's safety. I would rather the police concentrate on the real criminals than pulling over innocent people because their computer told them so. Am I being unfair - I don't think so. And wasn't the last person hanged in this country found to be innocent after all? Look at America - is that a safe place? |

It is still your insurance companies fault that the police computer flagged you as uninsured and its not only money at the end of the day, without insurance people don't receive the compensation they need after serious, crippling accidents, conpensation they need in order to try to live a normal life.
Its unfortunate that the police didn't respond quickly enough when you needed them but to be rude to a traffic officer for doing his job because of your insurance companies mess up IMO is just wrong!
Its also worth considering that almost 80% of uninsured drivers have no MOT and no driving license therefore posing a very real risk and danger to you, your family and all of us - they are protecting you, yours and us!

Who said I was rude to the police officer? I said I was so mad I couldn't look at him and also gave him a list of things I have insured as well as my car but I was certainly not rude. I was very upset but not rude. I am also not an uninsured driver - I follow the law. |

I would have been miffed too Sarah, I know what some traffic police can be like (not even beat officers like em!) This happened to a friend of mine too, insurance companies fault...so she rang them up & they got an ear bashing! Its frustrating when you know you are innocent, if its anything like Burnley we see drivers commiting offences daily & there is never any police around to witness it. Think they call it sods law |

They really do have nothing better to do! Last month I was fined for not wearing a selt beat - WHEN I WAS!! I had held down the strap across my shoulder (abt 3 inches!) whilst I picked up my purse on the floor - obviously a passenger at the time! The officer was so rude and spoke so quickly I had no clue what I was supposed to do with this ticket thing! Now I understand why alot of people don't respect the police |

I feel the same about the police. Never there when you need them. Our latest incident was being told by a very rude police woman to move my car from outside my house, (its been parked there for 10 years or so), because it was too near a junction. I must state here that we live on a really quiet crescent and the said junction is just a continuation of it. I politely asked how long I had to move it as I had just sat down with my lunch and I was told 5 minutes else she would have it towed away. Well you can imagine, my son (who is 18) and his girlfriend were there at the time and became a bit mouthy, no threats or anything, just telling them to move everybody else as well as me and how ridiculous it was. Well can you believe it, on the evening my OH and myself was out walking the dogs when we saw 3 police officers at my mothers house. My son lived there for a while, so we were guessing they wanted him. We asked what they wanted him for and they were quite rude again. My OH explained if it was from earlier it was all crap and they were wasting their time. We carried on our way and I rang my son to tell him what had gone on and he told us there were 3 police cars outside his flat. We walked through the park to where he lives and saw 3 policemen taking him off while another 2 stood outside the flat. This all became about because the cocky hard faced police woman earlier in the day felt threatened by him! Well, he was taken to court and fined £180. You only get £80 if you're drunk and disorderly or abusive. I for one certaintly don't respect them!!! |

What really annoyed me is that I wasn't doing anything suspicious. I wasn't driving wrong or not indicating etc. I just happened to be the unlucky person in front of this policeman at the traffic lights and so for something to do he put my Registration in his computer and bingo. |

So.......OK .......if a bomber is driving a car ( loaded with TNT)on the way to the airport ...and his vehicle flashes up with no insurance ( this information originates from a system other than a police system ) and the coppers do not pull him over I think people may have something to say about that. You did say the policeman said " Sorry to pull you over ....." Do you want the police to act on information given to them ??? or just to make snap judjement on your appearance...and just hope you are not an uninsurered driver about to crash into a bus stop full of people.( all someones family!!!!) It is embarrassing to be treated like a possible criminal and I am sure you are justified in feeling unduly accused.....BUT having worked in one of the busiest cop shops in Bristol,( known as crack-house central) and am about to start in another busy one in Wilts, I can assure you I have yet to meet a copper who " has nothing better to do". I know there are police who could benefit from a crash course at charm school......but look what happens when they are " out there catching criminals"......the courts let them off with a pathetic fine...and they are back driving around uninsured, being nightmare neighbours to someone, and sticking two fingers up at the police. I am sorry you had a bad encounter, but if you need them and you call them.....they will be there if they can... and if they can't its not because they don't care, or are sitting on their backside somewhere....it cos they are filling out a million forms, following orders from higher ranks. Police are people too............some good some not so good. Some bloody brilliant Polly ( no ..I am not a police officer) Edited...having just read the "stolen Horses post" note the advice is to ring ...........and Horsewatch, email communication is co-ordinated by....you guessed it Police officers! |

P.S. He said, "Sorry to pull you over so suddenly." As in it was in the MIDDLE of a main road. If I ever decided to go darkside and become a mad bomber I will make sure I have insurance on my vehicle so they won't think to stop me on my way. |

A few weeks ago my friends son was pulled over and asked if he was insured as the system was down. He gave the policeman his insurance docs. He is covered on his works insurance and pays an extra £25 a month for his own cars, he is insured to drive practicly anything. The police said he wasnt insured, impounded the car and crushed it. He went to court and the judge said he was insured. He is now fighting to get money for his car and compensation. Why was he pulled, because he was driving a boy racer car and is only 19. He drives for a living so always drives correctly as he wont risk his job. I have loads of similer stories, mostly involving myself, a 43 year old who likes to drive vw golfs, wears a baseball cap and likes rave music. It usually starts with, is this your car mate, ooh sorry madam. |

apparently.... your reg is automatically picked up my the cameras in their cars now and goes throught to a database of unisured/untaxed/unmot'd motors.... I think they are obliged to pull you over becuase of this technology regardless of any driving errors... I do think its really good as our insurance premiums are creeping up becuase of the number of unisured vehicle accidents... an insured vehicle hits you, your insurance company claim from a "uninsured vehicles" part of your poilcy... this is then recooped from everyone elses premium increases - i think.....
but as I said in my last post... i would have taken the opportunity to revel in the fact that I was innocent of any crime and talked him to death!! I WOULD have been the most annoying person he pulled over that day! |

Have to say, on the occasions I and my family have been vicitms of minor crimes, including myslef beeing punched by a burly 6 ft 2 20 odd stone man because someone I knew hadn't settled his shop bill - about a tenner - we have been treated quite as nuisances wasting their time. My son was badgered into dropping a case against 3 men who broke down his door, physicaly attacke him, just because he had become a friend to one of their former girl friends. They were not even going out together!
But we have had many many minor motoring incidents, like being parked outside our own house and no parking cones put around our car and being fined, most of which any REASONABLE person would not have even mentioned, but the PC at the time obviously got pleasure outof using his / her POWER.
FAR TOO MANY OF THE WRONG SORT OF PEOPLE IN THE FORCE. |
