------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS WILL TAKE A MINUTE OF YOUR TIME AND WILL SAVE A CREATURE – AND HOPEFULLY REMOVE THIS SO-CALLED “ARTIST”!!! Hi all, this is a very serious matter...
In the 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, he tied him to a rope in an art gallery, starving him to death.
For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.
Does it look like art to you?
But this is not all ... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008. Let's STOP HIM!!!!!
Click on the following link : http://www.petitiononline.com/ea6gk/petition-sign.html or http://www.petitiononline.com/13031953/petition.html or just copy it in your browser to sign a petion to stop him to do it again, then digit the name Guillermo Vargas Habacuc to find the petition to sign.
Please do it.
It's free of charge and it will only take 1 minute to save the life of an innocent creature.
Please also send this e-mail to as many contact as you can... Let's stop him!!!
If you want to double check all the above informations you can google the name of the 'artist' to see all I have just said corresponds to truth.
Thank you

Dear Cate:
Since my work involves animal advocacy/activism, I am well acquainted with this issue and thought I might address your concern.
If you don't mind, I'm posting below a letter we received from the organization that is monitoring this artist and his supposed exhibition at either the same museum or at another location. As you'll see from the letter, there are certain aspects of this person's "artistic" (certainly cannot be called art as far as I'm concerned!) display.
While I'm usually one of the first people to sign a petition that speaks out loudly against any type of animal cruelty, I'm not sure the effort put forth here will have any true effect because there are inconsistencies.
Here is the letter from the World Society for the Protection of Animals:
Thank you for contacting the WSPA regarding your concern over this situation in Central America. The WSPA is well aware of this. The act of cruelty committed by Vargas has different versions and there has been a certain level of inconsistency in the information circulated. But for WSPA, irrespective of the outcome, it is a reprehensible abuse committed by any standard.
As you may know, the artist is Costa Rican but this exhibit happened in a Nicaraguan art gallery last October. While there is an animal cruelty law in Costa Rica, there is no such legislation in Nicaragua; therefore the artist did not break the law by mistreating this dog.
The news did not seem to get picked up by the Costa Rican press until about a month after it happened. Even then there was very little coverage and it was never made clear whether the dog actually died, how long it was there and why nobody did anything if it was suffering. Following this, people around the world began protesting against Vargas. Our Costa Rica office issued a statement in response to this act.
The artist has been invited to exhibit at the Central American Biennial set to take place in Honduras this year, and the WSPA learned that, unfortunately, his participation cannot be avoided as he is showing a different exhibit (apparently not involving a dog this time), and because he received a private invitation. It was also confirmed that Vargas was invited to be part of the VI Biennale after the 2007 Art Biennale, in which the artist participated with a work different from that presented in Nicaragua.
WSPA’s Costa Rica office has continued to monitor this situation closely. We met with Business Owners for Art (Empresarios por el Arte), an organization co-sponsoring the Honduras Biennial. In the meeting, we expressed our position against the act in Nicaragua and formally requested that one of our member societies, the Honduras Association for the Protection of Animals and their Environment (AHPRA), be invited to observe the Biennial exhibition. Organizers of the Biennial agreed to make this invitation, and in addition included competition rules to prohibit the abuse of animals.
You can read a further summary of this situation on our website at: http://www.wspa-usa.org/pages/2341_no_excu...for_cruelty.cfm
This issue is of concern to the WSPA, and it is deplorable that this artist will be able to gain publicity through this second exhibition despite his previous display involving mistreatment of this dog.
Thank you again for being in touch. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again at wspa@wspausa.org – we will be happy to help. Please also keep an eye on our website (www.wspa-usa.org) for any future updates.
Kind regards,
Ruth Morse Supporter Liaison World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) Lincoln Plaza 89 South St., Suite 201 Boston, MA 02111
I hope this helps, Cate!
