Does anyone know if a professional trainer, who is taking money for their services, can also judge? Are there any rules about this?
I do remember something being discussed earlier - sorry can't seem to find it.
Thanks in advance

i am lmost sure that they can. But they are not allowed to judge anything that is,or has been produced by them, anything that they bred or anythig they have delings with. the are obliged to """""declare thier interest""""" to the governing body of the class i.e. the A H S. hope this is of help. sue |

There are not many professional trainers on the panel are there? My recollections of the rules are as above, you can't judge a horse you have had any connection with, although I have seen a judge place a horse very highly who was by his son's stallion, and was allowed within the rules. |

Yes of course, there are lots of producers and trainers who judge, but as others have said, they have to "declare any interest" and are not allowed to compete at the same show they are judging at, I believe. |

There is nothing in the ECAHO Blue Book that prohibits a professional handler from judging. Although there was a lot of talk about it a couple of years ago and it appeared that this was going to be put in place nothing more happened. |

The discussion I remember was whether ridden judges can/should judge shows in which horses they have produced are forward, and I seem to remember the rule was that they can't judge a horse that they have trained/produced/owned within the last year. I'm sure the AHS must have this rule easily to hand! This has always been a contentious issue since, in that discussion, it was said that there would be no judges if they weren't allowed to produce and show themselves as that was their interest. But equally, people were saying judges would only be human to put other judges up the line because they might well be showing in front of those competitors as they judged other classes! Was that the thread you meant Jude? |

Hi Jude
I echo the above they are not supposed to judge anything that they have been involved in either livery/training/breeding, the latter more difficult to avoid if you stand a stallion or sell youngstock how do you know if there is conflict???

Jude:
As I understand it, the AHS feels it is not in anyone's best interest for *in-hand* judges to also take horses in for training on a professional basis. I know there had to be a compromise when it came to ridden judges, as without the professional producers, we would have hardly any ridden judges!
I suggest you contact a member of the Shows & Events Committee - eg Elaine Mann who is on AL, or Finn Guinness - for a definitive answer to this question.

Jude I seem to remember a judges meeting some years ago that held a private vote on the matter. The result was for In-hand judges not to be professional show handlers. This is not to say anyone would doubt their integrity, it was purely a preference at that meeting. The vote was an exercise as to a general feeling of judges there. Well, that's how I read it all. It would be unworkable now days which is probably why we see more in-hand handlers who are judges.
As has been said we wouldn't have any ridden judges if this was brought into rule.
In an ideal world I think a judge should not show, but it is a huge burden to put on anyone, would we have any judges at all? I like to show occasionally too.
As for judges taking liveries, I think you might exclude most of them now. |
