Tessa (Arab) - due to foal in the next couple of weeks - is a really flirty girty - flashing & showing to Maj (mare} whos in season in the next field! Tessa is so large she could put a Thelwell pony to shame on the girth front!!! Is it normal for infoal mares to still keep courting horses in neighbouring fields - Tessa - just loves all our geldings & talks & shows to them - all through her pregnancy - the hussy!!!!

Yep Judith, pretty normal. Maggie has been 'showing' constantly for the last 6 weeks and she's due to foal about the same time as Tessa. My gut instinct tells me that she will have a colt, but other mares that I have noticed showing 'flirty' behaviour normally act 'coltish' as well - e.g. trying to cover other mares and striking out like stallions!!! Maggie is just 'showing' to anything that moves - so hopefully she will have another filly!!!!!
It's just a surge of either testosterone or progesterone I think!!!

Tessa is a funny little mare - terribly sweet - perfect Arab my little pony girl!!!
She is due in under two weeks - but prev owners say she always goes over two weeks & Tessa in her 17 years has apparently had a lot of foals!!!
Polly our QH is not due until end month into early June - but looking at her I think she will foal before Tessa - shes' bagging up well already & is very ponderous!!

i should`nt worry judith, the funniest thing i ever saw was at sunray anglo arabian stud, two pregnant mares taking turns trying to mount each other! if i had`nt seen it with my own eyes i would`nt have believed it!  both went on to have normal healthy foals!  |

Yes it is really funny, but thats when you know the time is close, I wonder if its some sort of inherited herd thing? where the mare wants the protection of the stallion and others ?,one of my mares tends to get all lovey with me close to her time, ( thats Shani, I her brought into the world) I think she sees me as a herd leader and wants me close when it is her time |

| one of our Arabian mares is an utter Cow when she not infoal, yet as soon as she's got a little one on the way, totally different attitude, not to sure about the flirting business though |

Ah they look great Judith.
It's probably hormone levels. I've not had any kds myself, but I know of friends who have become rather 'amorous' despite being heavily pregnant. Maybe it's something like that? |
