Urgent Plea to Deputy District Judge Sandeep Kainth - Amersham Horses
Deputy District Judge Sandeep Kainth has ordered 29 donkeys and ponies be returned to Mr James Gray and his family. Oxford magistrates heard the family consider some of the donkeys and Shetland ponies to be pets.
Judge Kainth agreed to return the pets to the family but rejected their application to have the remaining 82 animals returned. These animals will instead be sold at auction in May in Warwickshire.
The RSPCA had argued that it should be allowed to oversee the re-homing of the animals in order to safeguard their future welfare.
But Judge Kainth said the donkeys and Shetland ponies had to be returned to the Grays, "as there is no evidence to show they are in any danger".
RSPCA inspector Kirsty Hampton said the decision to return the horses to the Grays was "devastating".
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
Please write directly to Judge Kainth to express your views on exactly why these equines SHOULD NOT be returned to the Gray family and why the remaining horses SHOULD NOT be sent to a public auction.
Deputy District Judge Sandeep Kainth Oxford Magistrates Court PO Box 37, Speedwell Street Oxford Oxfordshire OX1 1RZ
Please ask every animal lover you know to write to Judge Kainth. There might only be a tiny chance that we can change his mind but for the sake of the horses that chance must be taken. Please write even if you are not living in the UK. If these animals are returned or sold then it will set a very bad precedent for future cruelty cases.
We have set up a Facebook group to help spread the word.

Thank you.

ridiculous decision both with respect to sending the horses back and selling the others. a real step backwards for getting horse welfare taken seriously. have joined the facebook group and will be writing but the cynic in me doubts he will even open the letters |

there was such a public outcry at the time and presumably a lot of money donated to help the rescued horses, this idiot judge and his decision needs some media attention as most people won't have heard about this and will (hopefully) be horrified. The Animal Welfare Act is pretty useless if this is what is going to happen in such a horrific case. |

It has finally made it to the news on Radio 2. Spokesman for the RSCPA said they were devastated at the decision - and rightly so. I'm not the greatest fan of the RSPCA but they must be highly aggrieved that all their efforts, the public's and everyone else who helped not counting the time and money involved in this operation, has come to such an ill founded decision. Just makes you wonder what is the point of caring sometimes. I'd like to know if this particular Judge is familiar with animal welfare issues - seems highly unlikely in this instance, although actually, even if it just boils down to a case of right and wrong, he's got it horribly wrong. Not happy. |

I know there is an ongoing prosecution so we have to be careful not to prejudice procedings but I felt I had to say this.
For anyone who complains about and discredits the RSPCA unfortunately this is the result - farmers and pet owners are claiming that the return of the Shetlands and donkeys and sale of the others is a positive outcome. Apparently it was someone passionate about horses who was representing the Grays http://www.blytheliggins.co.uk/page.php?currentpageref=149

I know there are a lot of problems with the RSPCA and people may be unwilling to support their actions in some cases, but surely this horrific case is one where every animal lover should support them? I don't see how 32 dead horses and others in terrible conditions that required lots of specialist care can be the result of biased reporting. |

Confirms my opinion of so many judges. Disgraceful. I will try and find a few others to write but wondered if writing to the law society to complain might be better, anyone here got any ideas on this?

I still do not see how this judge can have made this decision before the prosecution case is heard. If in law the bloke is found to be the total sh*t he obviously is and is therefore fined/banned/shot/boiled in oil. What happens then? How do all these organisations who must have spent thousands of pounds getting these horse on the road to recovery get their money back? I am assuming that the horses will have been sold and long gone to other owners by then and would be irretrievable. Are the relevant organisations going to appeal this? If not, why not? Seems very odd to me as well as being downright inhumane. |
