Sue, you dont have to join anyone but you have to pay various registration fees, depends on whether you are training yourself in which case you can get a special owner/trainer package or someone else is training for you. if you go onto the ARO website and then onto the registration forms part its all explained. you can also phone them, they are very helpful.

Hi Sue,

Who are you planning to race?

Cost vary depending if you are doing the work yourself. I trained between 2 - 3 last season and as I did all the riding (with a friend helping out a few nights a week), I saved a fortune on labour costs. I also used to like to train them from the field (or small paddocks) as it kept them nice and relaxed, this helped with Ku and Mary who were highly strung. So costs was just feed really, then registration fees, entrys decs etc for race days and transport (I had a cheap old lorry so that helped cut costs).

It is more expensive to have them in training but I think it is worth it to know that you are getting a true reading of your horses ability, which for me as a breeder is vital. I gave up training at the end of last year and have sent my 5 yr old homebred Sakeena Sky Zayin away to be trained, my work hours this year made it impossible to train and I lost my grass gallops last season which severly hampered my training regime.
