The part of the forelimb of the horse below the carpus and tarsus (which is in fact the metacarpus and metatarsus respectivley)is refered to the cannon (or shin in the forelimb). An old term for this region of the hind limb is "shannon", but this is usually also refered to as cannon. Quote taken from Master of Animal Studies Dr Paul Mills
God bet you wished you hadn't of asked hey |

Sorry its an old horsemans name for the bone between hock and fetlock, and it just stuck with me when we had the livery yard he used to come and visit he was in his eighties and had worked at chevely park stud at Newmarket for years, working with horses since he was 11 years old and when I questioned him , he said " I thought you were a horse woman" and everyone since has known exactly what it is, even in the Middle East and Egypt and Dubai, so it made me feel silly too, but I was never rude about it and just thought well you learn something everyday this man was amazing actually we had a horse in the yard that had a hardened lump on its leg, did not bother it in any way and he put something on it, told my friend to do it every day within month six weeks it had reduced quite dramatically in size |

Would you consider foundation, Sports Arabians and In-hand Arabians? a) Come from different Lineage b) Come from Similar important lineage. c) Come from the same Lineage

My questions are kept simple only as I am looking for an answer!
Let me explain over a time I have found a divided opinion regarding TYPE, I have heard this connected to the WORKING (ridden) and the Exotic (in-hand). This divide is openly announced and many names are used to define one from the other. I ONLY have my own opinion regarding the lineages similarities or differences. Recognising the respect I have, my heart is open to a bigger view regarding a possibly complicated Question. This topic was placed on AL as over the last 2yrs there has been a shift in the UK breed and an increase in imports. As a small breeder owner your answers may not change any thinking. But as an Arabian lover it will!!! This is why as I posted before I am very grateful for all your help. Ananda

Ananda, this is as always, just my opinion, but there should really be NO dividing line, ALL arabains should be bred for that which they are known for, A beautiful mystical creature with facial features that seperates them from any other breed. Is strong enough and hardy enough to carry a man in to battle, should ideally stand no more than 15 hands, carrying its tail like a banner, bone as dense as steel, dark skin below a coat that reflects the sun, kind and gentle ,will sleep in your(tent) home amongst your children. without all these traites, it is not a true Arabian.
