I already had one, Cookie the 'Yor Chi' (Chihuahua x Yorkshire Terrier) I try to avoid the littlies as plenty of other rescues do them but everyone is overflowing right now. This one's a 'Pomruss' or 'Pomack'(Pomeranian x Jack Russell) They paid 350 euros for him last Christmas and the kids thought a puppy was such a neat gift they were given another one this year. No time for two dogs..I was at one of the traveller camps today trying to get an awfully thin Basset hound bitch (about 18mnths old, probably stolen but there's no way to be sure until she's been scanned for a microchip) out of there but not doing very well. They're planning to use her to flush out badgers for pit fights. She's already had a litter by one of the camp terriers but the last one died on Sunday-just 5days old so that's all right isn't it. Anyway this very respectable looking man in an 07 model Volvo estate pulled in,spoke briefly to the travellers told them the story, did they want the dog. They took it,turned it over, discovered it was a male and, probably to get me off their backs about the basset, gave it to me.Lovely wee dog SO CUTE.bet he was irresistable when he was a baby. Just garbage now though right? I'll go back on Friday and try again for the basset. It's too soon but I'm desperately worried for her, she's way too thin and I suspect an internal infection that may have poisoned her milk and killed her pups.I have a n emergency plan that I can only use once on any one group of travellers.I always turn tp with meat for their dogs so they're used to me feeding them. The trick is to slip one dog the meat laced with tranquiliser. The dog starts to stagger, they're convinced it's dying and let me have it.The risk of course in doing that is that if the dog is too ill the ACP might kill it and I've spent some anxious hours waiting for the dog to come around but on the other hand by the time I'm desperate enough to try it the dog will certainly be dead in a few weeks if I don't.This'll be the third dog saved that way - if it works.

Goodness Bluehaven. I can remember doing this kind of stuff , as a young vet nurse with one of the vets I worked ( and slept!)with..all undercover. He was a Kiwi a locum, and could not get his head around the dog fighting going on in the North East ( back in the eighties)...we used to lay "ACPed" meat around and then casually drive up in a van asking for " ouwt that can breed" they would give or sell us the dogs that they thought were poisoned...it worked many times. I take my hat of too you , do watch your back. Polly |
