It is mostly used for BSJA jumping ponies, to 'prove' they are within their height restrictions, eg 12.2, 13.2 14.2 etc (I don't do centimeters!!). Ponies can have an annual height certificate until they are 8 years old, then a life height cert. I presume that other horses can also have a life height certificate, although unless you want to prove to someone the height of a horse (for sale or at stud) I don't see the point. |

Because mainly they are not obviously 13.2 etc ie any normal person might guess they are too tall, so you buy a certificate which says that they are smaller and that makes it OK - this is only a problem when your pony is 12.3, 13.3 or 14.3 as it would look too small (showing) or be too small (jumping) in its real class. Good job we dont have this for Arabs as lots of them are unfashionably 14.3 (except when they are for sale when they are ALL 15 hands) |

All sorts of horses need them from BSJA ponies to tiny tot lead rein show ponies. Anything that has to 'measure in' for class type and rider age group. You take pony to JMB approved vet, measure it on their level pad, give em £60 and you get to be that height for the year. After 2, and if pony over certain age you get LHC - can make a lot of difference if selling a 14hh SHP! Rules may be different now. Heights in arabs definitely a grey area.... many 15hh are way smaller than my 14.2hh!! |

Glad you asked that question, my Arab gelding came with a height certificate, it was an annual one. I presume he must have been used for jumping in his earlier days. |

There are 2 measuring boards, FEI & JMB. The FEI is the governing body for the international comps and JMB is for everything else. If it is dressage related then I would assume it would be the FEI height as the only height that matters in dressage is for the ponies which have to be 148 cms & under (14 2hh approx). However the FEI brought out new rules last year and the ponies were measured on competition day and they allowed for shoes & tension at the event which I think I read was 150cms.
Also if the Stallion is standing as a Sports Horse then the SPSS allow up to 158 cms (15 2hh) for their graded stallions, Ousbek was a SJ Arab example. |
