Hi,
Has anyone ever heard of this breed of horse? AKHAL-TEKE?
They are supposed to be quite rare,

Hi Linda, Yes I love these horses, I went on the British Akhal-Teke website, they are exceptionally expensive, and as you say very rare. They have the most amazing coats, almost satin, the chestnuts are amazing. I would love to have one but at them moment they are so rare, it is not easy to purchase a mare. Nicky |

Hi Nicky,
Thank you for your reply,
I am buying a Cremello mare and she has a Akhal-Teke palomino colt foal at foot, he will be registered with the Palomino society and the Akhal-Teke society, He is superb so I may keep him entire,
I did hear about the coats being like satin, they are supposed to be a very atheltic breed too,

I love the look of them, and there is one (or part bred) on the endurance circuit. They have an amazing sheen on their coat ,almost metalic ,and very striking. However, the ones I have seen appear to be rather long in the back. polly |

Hi Polly,
They are long in the body, this is how they are supposed to be, tubeular looking,
I am suprised how many people have heard of them, They are very popular in endurance I am told!

They're Russian aren't they? I always remember a picture of one when i was a child, it was a palomino but as previously mentioned with an almost metallic shimmer. |

I seem to remember that the Queen received a stallion as a gift from a foreign country some years ago and it went to Saintwestwell stud where it has bred and used for endurance. Try www.akhal-teke.co.uk. I think they are athletic but their conformation is quite different from we consider to be good conformation. Long in the back and very upright through the shoulder and neck. Speaking of rare breeds, I quite fancy a Shagya arab - like our pure breds but taller. |

In the dark ages when I was only about 10 or 11, i had the observers book of horses and ponies, just a pocket size mine on information. i often used to look at the A-T as it was alphabetically close to Arab.
I wish I knew which chestnut stallion posed for the Arab, one of the most perfectly conformed and attractive horses, nothing compared! |

My friend bought an Akhal Teke stallion from that place in Epsom, it was about 11 years ago now. He was 1 of only 12 in the country at the time, and although she really wanted him gelded she had a lot of pressure on her to keep him entire. She BSJA'd him up to newcomers. She sold him in the end to the USA and he now stands at stud there and is a very succesful event horse. His name is Goklen. If I can find his web page I'll put a link on. |

This link shoes my favourite all time Akhal Teke stallion Ekemen:
http://www.akhalt-service.ru/h1.php?id=216
You might find the link useful
It is however, very difficult to buy and transport Akhal Tekes from the former USSR, there was a lady on anther equine forum who did that and it was a nightmare. (Plus she had lived in Russia too and was very experienced culturally).
The Akhal Teke is a very ancient and pure breed and is hypthesised to be far older than the Arabian. (mt DNA studies) I have the paper around somewhere.
I absolutely love them and have always wanted one, but not quite got round to it yet.

Many years ago I had a Russian Budenovsky (not sure of spelling), chestnut mare she was a lovely metalic colour like the Akele-Teke horses. Only problem was she had a hammer and sickle brand which I was rather embarrased by. Her pedigree was 18 pages long with the translation. I also once saw an Akele-Teke stallion who was a gorgeous grey dun, in the sunlight he was the nearest thing to a silver horse, realy stunning. There was a speight of importing Russian horses in the late 70's. I bought mine from a show jumping yard who had rushed her training and made her very panicy if she touched a fence, had a few hairy rounds on her. Saw an ad. for Akele-Tekes in an issue of Horse Deals some time ago.

The Akhal-teke certainly go back a long way!
They are quite different to what I am used to seeing,
I would have to give them a few more sunday dinners though, if I owned one
