I was just wondering, as our puppies are so young I would really like to give them something to help boost their immune systems, mum stopped feeding them around four weeks old so they don't have as much protection from her as they should and they can't have their first vaccination until they are 8 weeks old.
Obviously we are being careful about contact with other people and our Rottie bitch is only allowed to the farm with me so she is not going anywhere that other dogs might have been etc.
BUT I am a bit concerned about them going for their vaccinations in 2 weeks time when their immune systems could be a little low - does anyone know of anything that is safe to feed to 6 week old puppies that could help boost them a bit??
They are currently being fed on Pedigree puppy complete dry food and Pedigree puppy meat but will be gradually changed over to Eukanuba Giant Breed puppy food....
Thanks in advance

Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

Nature Diet is great for puppies as no nasty additives. (My boxer's hair started to fall out because he had allergy to Bakers complete puppy, pedigree puppy and Winalot!!) I also feed Iams as again no nasty additives :))
As long as you are keeping your puppies away from where other dogs go you should be fine ie. Do not put them on the floor anywhere other than your own home before they have their jabs even in the vets.
Oops..Forgot to say the above will not boost the pups immune system, if you are worried I would speak to your vet sweeetie :)) |

I don't think there is anything in puppy milk that will boost their immune system. You could ask your vet about a pre vacc parvo jab which can be given at 6 weeks I believe and it maybe worth considering at 6months of age to have an extra parvo. Large breeds seem more susceptible to the virus for some reason |

They will have recieved quite a lot of their immunity from the first 2/3 weeks of mum feeding them. You don,t have to give them anything, just keep them away from people and dogs who are in contact with other dogs. Georgiauk is right that some large breed appear to be less resistant to parvovirus, but I think this is to do with the fact that when vaccinated against it, the Parvo vaccine ( weakened live vaccine) is not always present after 6-8months,..and so they need more regular vaccinations. Have a word with either your Vet or a VERY experienced BM breederhttp://southernbullmastiffsociety.co.uk/ good luck and keep the photos coming... |

Goats milk is very nutritious and also believe it or not lambs milk powder, whelpi is the proper puppy milk can get it from your vets. Giant breeds need extra calcium, immunity will come from mom, a home visit with giant breeds for vacs is better as parvo can be left on the floor and only puppies get it, it is a killer not worth the risk, |

Its probly too late to be of much help now but you were worrying needlessly.Pups get their protection from the milk produced in the first few days only-it's called colostrum.Ialways give pregnant bitches a booster vacc 2/3 weeks before whelping. This passes on to the pups for that extra protection.Natural immune system boosters are:broccoli, spinach, green tea, echinacea, cats claw, flax seed oil(has to be mixed with cottage cheese or they can't digest it) l wouldn't go NEAR Whelpi, seen too many colicked pups-it can clump in the gut-nasty!And it contains no immune boosters.Extra calcium is a good idea for all breeds of pup and mum too as she depletes her own supply to give to her babbies.Goats milk is fabulous if you can get it but limestone flour is just as good, cheap and more readily available.A little extra oil on their food-l like corn or olive best-gives the coat a lovely shine, aids digestion and helps prevent gastric torsion in big breeds. |
