How long did it take you to spot the horse on the right?

EXCELLENT photo!!!!!
I wear High-Viz all the time when riding! Have done so for the past 15 something years.........before it became the thing to do! When we lived over in Herefordshire - I found out that the nickname given to me by the other riders was the "Christmas Fairy" because I wore high-Viz & also lights!! At least I was VERY visable on the busy Herefordshire roads - unlike them in their dull normal riding clothes!! I used to do hacking often up to 100 miles a week on my Arab mare Fly - often involving busy roads - so I wore the works & was impressed as to how the traffic was "nice" to us!!!
I still wear high-Viz every time I ride out - even on our very quiet lanes here & on the open hills.........well if I came off & was down - hopefully I would be spotted from the air with the high-ViZ!! I have also noticed that when I'm riding out on the open hills - the low flying jets (we get a lot of them here!) will veer away to avoid me!!
A friend had his mare hit & severly injured (was put down) on a really quiet Herefordshire lane - he was in dull coloured clothes!! |

Have to agree, it is an excellent photo! Hi Viz clothing is essential this time of year, if only everybody would wear it, I have found one of the most effective things to wear is a hi viz vest with a stick on L plate, seems to make drivers think |

You are right. Until I read the text I didnt even see a horse on the right. I wear mine all year round. I have a mesh type one I wear in the summer and 2 or 3 for winter including one that lights up. |

i always wear yellow tabard when hacking out. should get more really. Do not be tempted to buy anything that may illustrate that your horse is young or a learner or not safe on the roads. a few years ago a case went to court whereby the rider was wearing "caution young horse" and this was deemed by the court to be an admittance that the horse wasn't road safe. i cannot remember the exact outcome of the case - someone on here i am sure will but don't put any doubts in writing on yourself. |

Before it became more popular, my daughter used her sewing machine to good effect by making hi-viz rugs for local riders. Each was personalised with a reflective motive int he corner, Barron had a crown for example. I've just got some hi-viz wet weather gear off the internet for the 'in case' I have to use my moped if no car! |

If you go on the v-bands website - sorry better not post the link here! there are a selection of short Video clips produced with the BHS showing "different" amounts & colours of Hi-viz clothing - very eye opening!

I ALWAYS wear Hiviz , we have low flying aircraft here and we need to let them see us from above , and have bought my kids their own hiviz for Xmas ( good stocking filler !) as they are now starting to hack out with me . I lecture all the other riders in the area about saftey, being seen and riding defensivly( I Bore them to tears I,m sure) I love the ones that have tiny LCD lites on them !! Polly |

I always wear my hi viz. Pink for bright days and yellow for dull, dawn or dusk rides. I love the flashing light tabbards and the ones you can get for the horses - boots, tail and martingales. I intend to look like a mobile disco this winter and don't care how many folk laugh - at least we WILL be seen |

Very good and illustrates the problem! My friends and I have recently moved to a new yard with wonderful rides in the Pentland Hills Regional Park (south of Edinburgh). Someone asked us the other day why we wore hi viz on the hill, and really it is just in case of emergency if someone is out, falls off and needs to be spotted by helicopter etc. I did think that I should also put some hi viz stuff on the horse, just in case we part company and he then has to be located on the hill. Better to be safe than sorry! |

Didn't even see it 'til I read the text. Fortunately both my boy and Jaynes look like the one on the left when I ride them. BUT they have to wear PINK! I will try and get a photo to post. |

Certainly "Highlights" (sorry for the pun) what drivers do and don't see....
I wear Hi Viz all the time. Living in a rural area, I need all the help I can get for the country folk to acknowledge that I am there and need some road space!
The more high viz the better |

I always wear Hi-Vis Tabbard and hat band. Any horse I hack out on also has leg bands, reflective breastplate and refelctive strips on their bridle. I also use a reflective exercise sheets on cold mornings/evenings and bad weather.
Hi-Vis i my eyes should always be worn. In the summer because of the suns glare and the winter because of the dulness.
My funny story about hi-vis as I have 2 hi-vis bomber jackets one for work when i visit site (construction industry) and one for horse riding. I was getting funny looks and laughs on site one day and my boss, also the Managing Director of our company, couldn't help himself and kept quiet that I had worn my riding one that has "Please pass wide and slow" on it. it wasn't until we had been round the whole site that the site manager spotted my jacket and burst out laughing and told me what I had done
It is now a standing joke in our company that the office rottweiler needs to be passed wide and slow!!!!! |

I couldn't believe my eyes a couple of weeks ago. about four riders were out on the road - dark coloured horses and riders were in dark clothes. I only just saw them in time and dipped my headlights - yes DIPPED MY HEADLIGHTS
bl..dy idiots
oh yes, I always have my "pass wide and slow" tabbad on. the honey monster has two hi viz exercise sheets too

I've just sent that photo (courtesy of the BHS site) to our local RC newsletter to be included in an article, but I doubt if the message will get across. Most of the people I see out on dark bay horses, with no hi viz, are RC members.
Yesterday, at 6.05pm, I came across a rider on a coloured horse - mostly dark bay - and rider with dark coat on, accompanied by a black labrador. No hi viz, very difficult to see her on the dark lane. When I stopped to tell her she was really hard to see, and she ought to wear some hi viz, she just said "oh" and carried on. Anyone going fast round that lane - which a lot of people do - wouldn't have seen her in time to stop. As it was I could easily have hit the dog as the rider told me to just carry on saying the dog would move - which it didn't! Just as well I stopped until the dog did move. |
