Great news ! I have just come off the phone from speaking to the wonderful artists Judie kent P, and Alan Hunt, and they have kindly donated a painting each of their work to be autioned to the highest bidder and ALL the money sent to the Brooke hospital, so who wants to buy a lovely painting for Christmas? I guess I have to get this officially off the ground now ! opps edited to say this is NOT advertising and I shall be talking to Paula later today asking for her help in getting this worthy cause under way |

Ok - Hopefully I wont get into trouble for this I have placed an advert here on Alines in the MISC section earlier today, for a lovely Rambo Travel Rug/Cooler & Matching Tail Guard. The money raised from this item I shall donate to Brooke - its not expensive and is in excellent condition. We have also had a clear out at of a few things and Ive listed two items on another website - hopefully we should be able to send Brooke a bit of money to help these poor suffering animals |

Well done for reminding us of the suffering borne day in day out by by so many equines. Unfortunately I have seen only too much of this sort of thing with my own eyes when working as a vet for SPANA, who like The Brooke work tirelessly to improve the lot of working horses, donkeys and mules, and vitally to educate children of families who rely on these animals in the husbandry and respect that they deserve. Good for you Lynda

Lynda do you think you could incorporate Brooke Hospital into your thread title? There might be lots of people on here who aren't looking at this in case they won't like the content but who don't realise it is all in support of a great cause.

I have been donating monthly to the Brooke for many years and giving by "gift aid" means that they can claim your tax back on the money you donate.
While I don't condone how the poor horses and donkeys are kept one has to remember that most of the people also have wretched lives of non stop hard labour just to feed themselves and the only way they can do that is by working their animals into the ground. The wonderful thing about the Brooke is that they realise this and try to educate the people to realise that if they care for their animals better they will have a longer working life.
I always jokingly say that I make my horses sit on the settee once a year and watch the Brooke video so that they realise how spoilt and pampered they are!!!

I lived in Egypt at a child and I am 63 now. Nothing seems to have changed in fact it also seems worse. I was in terrible trouble when I shouted at a man in Arabic who was beating the hell out of his donkey. We can only do our best to help.
I was once told by an Egyptian diplomat never to sell an animal to his countrymen as they were ignorant and cruel. Nothing has changed. |

Pauline I know what you are saying and I agree they care nothing for their animals, but if we turn away they are going to continue to suffer . The brooke hospital group are doing all they can and with our help they can do more,! more is better than nothing. Education will help and the brooke send teams of people to schools, maybe the next generation will be better, but tourists need educating, because they MUST NOT GET IN CARRAIGES WHERE THE HORSE IS SEEN TO BE SUFFERING make the drivers see that if they care for their animals, tourists will ride and pay. I have to say the horses were miles better cared for in Luxor where the hospital is, so something must be getting through. |

Well said Jen! I wonder if someone could email the QR stud and ask them if they'd consider donating a covering? Lots of people willing to pay and it would be a massive boost to Lynda's fund! |

Tamila it is I agree a difficult moral dilemma. I had a discussion with someone who had been out there recently and I questioned e.g. the fact that Brooke encourage them to give the donkeys water, but that is only making a nightmare situation very slightly more bearable for them, and in fact extending the time they have to live in Hell, when they would be better off dead, and also another thing they do is teach them how to pad the harness so that it doesn't cause horrific open sores, again can be seen as simply prolonging the time these poor animals have to suffer. But the long process towards humane treatment of their animals has to start somewhere.By teaching them to show some consideration the way is opened to teach them to show more. Brooke do a wonderful job and the emphasis is on education---that has to be the right way to go about it and maybe eventually improving the lives of their animals so they can get more work out of them will lead to compassion and humane treatment for its own sake.

I see where you are coming from Heather, but by comforting the living animal and making its life a little more bareable is better than nothing after all if the animal dies another will take its place as for teaching them to pad the harness it was found that a thicker padding often encouraged more chaffing and rubbing due to the thickness becoming wet with sweat and containing more bacteria now they teach them to clean the harness and to take the harness off when the day is over. believe it or not some actually never have their harness off what is the answer? there is no quick solution, education has helped in Luxor, and slowly it is helping in other places to. there is a big team now going to more and more countries where they are needed. I have written an article and it should be going out to most magazines soon, also here on the A/lines, there is hope but it must be a joint effort for all of us. if the Brooke had the same attitude and walked away they would have nothing. please dont give up |

Zan I felt despondant in Egypt and India (it's even worse over there believe it or not ) but the hospitals really do give you hope and they are such an oasis in these places where human life is sadly worth very little and an animals much less .
Lynda I have a brand new copy of a beautiful 'coffee table book' The Arabian Horse: History, Mystery and Magic text by Peter Upton, Edited by Hossein Amirsadeghi and photos by Rik van Lent Sr and Jnr that I'm more than happy to donate to your Brooke collection. Not sure how to get it to you though?

I have read, and re-read this thread with tears in my eyes, and wonderered what I could do to help (welcome back Lynda, have missed you).
My Mum and Aunt went out to Egypt in the early 80's, the trip persuaded them to donate a sum of money each month to Brooke. Sadly my Aunt died of breast cancer and my Mum is now in a Nursing home diagnosed with Altzeimers (sp!), so their donation has ended (due to Nursing fees, etc, etc.) I would love to continue their legacy, but sadly as a farmer, funds are tight (to say the least).
I would love to donate a covering to my boy if it is OK to copy you Lynda? For obvious reasons, many people don't want to go down the Auction route again. I don't have many other items of value, so all I can offer is a covering, or a couple of well-worn rugs and a few tatty books!!

Carla I am sure anything will be great.although I dont think Paula is keen on a stud aution again, so I may have to withdraw Charismma, but between us we can raise a goodly sum from the christmas online sale of items . look arouns at things you might not need or use anymore, one mans rubbish is another mans treasure ! I have a bronze of a rearing arab which I will aution, I keep meaning to take a picture of it!. if we all take pictures of the items we are donating we will all have a fair idea of whats on offer. |

Would Paula allow us a thread full of sale items just for the Brooke? We could all post our pictures on it for maximum exposure and then perhaps send the money to you (or whoever, I know bit onerous) but at least we could keep a tally of how much raised? Alternatively we could just let you know how much we raise so that you can keep a total thing like they used to do on Blue Peter !

Yes Jen when I get the fund raising pack from the Brooke hospital, we are going to have an open auction of gifts and items donated by your good selves I have had another artist friend offer to do a portrait pastel of your favourite pet(dog or cat) offered to the highest bidder again. so we can bid for items in the sale openly and have a closing date sometime before christmas. it should be interesting as well as benificial to the recipient AND the Brooke hospital so if you would like a painting by famous artists, a pastel of your favourite pet, a bronze of an Arabian, signed copy of (Ride away singing) a story about Bazy Tankersley and signed by her. plus all the other gift items you are all going to find and donate, watch this spaceedited to say that arabian emporium are also making a kind donation of a show bridle to the auction |
