I am absolutely in tears here. I can't bear to think how you must have felt seeing this for real. The picture is horrifying enough.
It makes me sick to the stomach to think how these animals are being treated....

This is one of the many reasons why I do not go abroad. I can't cope with the upset.

How appalling. The picture itself tells of undescribable suffering. However, what is more upsetting, is the conditions these poor animals have endured throughout their lives.
I look at these pictures and feel so hopeless and ashamed to be part of the human race.

The Brooke have a video of them working in the mines, on average they last less than a year with the heavy work they do, before dying on the job. The mines are not accessible other than by donkey.

The excuse is that the families are poor and that this animal is the only way they can earn a living to survive.

Makes you so angry and sad. Unfortunately the cultures would not be receptive to the idea of birth control to lessen the human need, and ignorance of the needs of the animal upon which their own survival depends. The Brooke does a good job in very difficult circumstances.

I visted Brook when I was in Jordan, it was quite distressing but they are doing the best job possible with the resources they have... I now make a monthly donation to Brook Hospital. Anything we can do to help Brook educate the owners of these animals is well worth while...

I have so many other pictures that will break your heart, but I am keen to write an article on the Brooke hospital and all it is trying to do, they go to schools regularly to educate the children to respect the animals in their care, but the memories I have will haunt me forever, I cant go through life and ignore this, I have to do something positive and the first step will be to write as much as I can in as many magazines as I can. I am going to try and orgonise sponsored rides in aid of the brooke hospital. EDUCATION is the key to solving the problem, I urge evryone to NOT use the horse carriages unless the horse is well looked after, then the men might get the message, but I saw so many people just get into a carriage regardless of the state of the poor animal pulling it, and all you can hear is the sound of whips being used to make them go faster! I saw one horse not even 8 months old standing in a carriage , puss ozzing from wounds on his legs, sores were his harness rubbed him,and thinner than I have ever seen a living animal, his eyes were dead and he didnt except the apple I tried to give him ( didnt know what an apple was I can tell you I caused a stir when I went up to the man and started telling him off, my OH was getting worried as I attracted a crowd around me (even the police) anyway he got a good dressing down, but I dont think I acheived much, except a headache from all the crying I did that day

Now im almost in tears aswell ....
Oh God that is awfull , why dont they put them down where they collapse & then "dispose of them" instead of piling them on top of each other like household refuge
Cant believe that they are allowed to work horses with not an once of flesh on them either
I Cant remember where it was but my friend Rachel was so angry when she saw the state of the horses pulling the carriages in the heat of the day that when the bloke stopped & asked if she & her hubby wanted a ride she said i`d rather you gave that poor animal some bloody food , water & rest !

Sickening pictures. Those poor creatures!

If anyone wants an example of how street-carriage horses should be looked after, go to Bruges in Belgium. My mother lives there and I've had a few chats with the drivers of the horse-carriages that take tourists around the town.

I was so impressed with how well all the horses always looked, so I asked the drivers what their regime is. A horse works for one day, then has three days off - they have stables and nice pastures on the outskirts of the town.

The day they work is a long day, trotting round the cobbled streets. But - each 'circuit' of the town centre with tourist passengers includes a stop for the horse to rest and have a bit of food and water. This means they are guaranteed rest-breaks, even when things are very busy and there are few breaks between circuits. The passengers usually get out at the rest-break and pat the horse.

I have never seen any driver use the whip. There is no need - the horses are all lively and foward-going, trotting round with their ears forward, bright-eyed and eager. Most of them know the route so well that the driver barely even has to direct them, although some have to be restrained a bit as they get too enthusiastic and speedy!

So - it is entirely possible for hardworking street-horses to have a very nice life. If only the Bruges system could be adopted everywhere...

The tragedy of life for a lot of horses and donkeys in the world is sickening. It makes me feel ashamed to be human, I always feel so helpless when I see photos of suffering like that.

The Brooke's newsletters always haunt me for months afterwards, their work is fantastic.

Just an idea.......after seeing those sickening pictures, Lynda it must have been just heartbreaking to see, lets not send Christmas cards this year but instead all donate £10 to the Brook Hospital. If Lynda doesnt want to recieve the money and pass it on I will volunteer......but Im sure she will.
Lets face it we only throw them away in the New Year atleast by doing this our bit of money does some good.......what do you think.
Also other websites choose a charity to support every year, why cant we do that here? Ive also got books, magazines and bits for the Brook stall at Malvern as I didnt get to take the stuff this year.

Brooke do a wonderful job all over the place and especially in Egypt. Lynda---did you see the brick kiln donkeys? They work in horrendous conditions and without Brooke trying to educate the people they were working all day in and out of the brick kilns carrying huge loads without even a drink of water. The main problem is that the drivers rent the donkeys so have no need to look after them, and the owners find it easier to breed more than try to maintain the working donkeys---they are literally worked to death. Brooke are trying to change the leasing system so that owners take good care of their investments, as well as their mobile veterinary and education units. Very worthy of any donations

yes, i know what you mean Lynda. Again when I was in Jordan there were lots of horse & carts taking tourists through little petra. The carriages are only allowed two passengers on them but practically all of them had more. It made me sick! One of the horses couldn't make it up the slope which wasn't steep at all and the pony fell over - it was one of the mose distressing things I have ever seen. I was so annoyed as it was big people who were in the carriage, the exercise of walking would have done them good! Lazy B&*%£%DS!!!!

I think it is a wonderful idea Bridie, we can just send direct moneies to them although an a/liners xmas donation would be great instead of crimbo cards anyway I send e cards that dont cost anything anyway.
lets all put our thinking caps on and think of ways to raise funds for this cause please ,the best idea gets a mention in my articles which I am hoping will go into all our magazines plus the horse and hound if I can pursuade them!
No Zan I didnt go to see the donkeys in the kiln mines, there was suffering where ever I looked in the streets, Luxor was the best and a lot of the horses there were miles better, which says a lot for the brooke hospital , as they must be getting through!

Those pictures are horrific, and i think definitly educationis the way to go. To help these people realise that the better looked after these animals are the more work they would get from them etc.
There were a few shows that used to have a Brooke Stand at the show for people to buy goods/donate money etc.
Maybe large studs/breeders could agree to donate a percentage of their coverings/sales to the Brooke in 2008? Not just Arabian Studs - but studs and breeders all over the country - i'm sure for some (such as racehorses) a very small percentage would be a large amount of money.
