yesterday, she was so sweet, gentle and extremly bright, she would come and sit on your lap for a cuddle, and take tit bits from your hand so softly. But what I am so greatful to Daisy for is that she was instrimental(sp)in teaching my grandson to love and respect all animals, he has had her for nearly two of his five years and he is animal mad nowI believe if more childen had a Daisy in their lives they would grow up to love and respect ALL life no matter what the subject I know he will miss Daisy and so will Iwhat was Daisy? she was a Rat.

Oh Lynda, how sad, so sorry I wholeheartedly agree that children should learn to care for animals from a young age, I can't remember a time in my life when I haven't had animals to care for, no matter how small, both my girls, and my grand daughter, have always had animals to look after, pet mice included |

Poor Daisy,
I agree with you both that children need to learn about caring for animals and I am sure Daisy has taught him well. Rats are so clever she will have known how adored she was.

Hi Lynda,
I have kept fancy rats for years although i dont have any at the moment. I can totally relate to yours and your Grandsons love of Daisy. Rats are wonderful pets very loving, loyal, playful, intelligent - just like little puppies really. I grieved for a long time when my first rat died. Its such a shame they dont live very long - they get nasty respiratory diseases.
Will you be getting him another one?

I once trained a rat to press a lever in order to get some food. We only had 45 minutes to teach it from scratch and succeeded. I was amazed at how clever they are. |

Oh I'm so sorry to hear about poor Daisy Its lovely that your grandson had her to teach him such valuable life lessons...so many children these days lack the respect for ALL living things & its so sad. I always had pets as a child & loved them unconditionally (even the hamster who used t take great chunks out of my fingers & the guinea pigs who wee'd on me daily) |

Aw she looks gorgeous. My lads had rats as pets when they were children and had hours of fun with them. They can be delightful little creatures and so full of character. I am sure you little grandson has learned a lot from Daisy. Totally agree - children can learn a lot about love and life from their pets. I was never allowed any as a child and have had a continual menagerie since leaving home. |

Thanks everyone for your kind words I was thinking today while walking my dogs, about what makes some people cruel and un caring and what makes others kind and caring . I think a lot has to do with how we are brought up, I feel if all parents took the time to teach children empathy with animals and wild life, and show them the magic of woods and fields, butterflies and birds, ponds and streams there would be far less abuse in the world JMO |

Totally agree with you Lynda, I think children that have animals at an early age definitely learn respect as they grow up.
So sorry to hear about Daisy, have you told your grand son yet, poor lad?

oh poor daisy! i too have had rats as pets. my first was a male called teaco who used to curl up and watch tv with me like a dog. i was so upset when i lost him that the girls i worked with had a collection so that i could buy another. i got a female called pepe who looked just like daisy!
all children need pets i think, mine have so much more respect for them. unlike some of the morons who live near us who don't have them and do awfull things to people beloved pets.

Ahh reading this makes me want to have more ratties I always got mine from the RSPCA. They were free range and so just ran around the house and went to the loo in little potties They chase cotton like kittens and play fight with your hands. Their names were Ren, Stimpy, Santa, Lilo, Stitch, Simba, William and Ben. When Ben died (he was the last to go) i was so upset my boyfriend said i couldnt get anymore |

RIP Daisy. You deserve a good after life after all the pleasure you obviously have give on this earth. My children all had a pet to look after from very young. Only my daughter went on to do anything with animals and has become a vet.
Thinking ofg you and yours Lynda |
