Not sure as to what forum to ask this on...but since this is a pedigree board, I suspect some may have and use the Arabian Horse Datasource 2001. I can't get it to work with Vista.

Arabian Datasource 2001 works fine with XP but just got a new computer with Vista and I get error messages:
"2147217843 Not a valid account name or password" next message after clicking
"Error 91 Variable or With variable block not set" then another message before shutting down.
Runtime error...this app has requested Runtime to shut it down in an unusual way

I even have the computers networking and I still get the message when I access the one loaded on my XP laptop and try to run it via the network on my Vista laptop. I tried reloading it with all virus programs shut down, then restarting the computer, then setting the program compatibility (XP) and security.

Anyone been able to use AHD with Vista? Thank you!

Hi there, it does not really help you but I got a new PC with Windows Vista in April and have been using my Datasource account with no problem ever since. I have had to change my internet security settings to "safe site" to use some interactive websites such as photo albums and ordering systems although I never had to do this for Datasource - you could try it if you have not already. If you can email Datasource from any computer, maybe they can reset your password or make some suggestions themselves.

Not sure this helps you much - Vista can cause glitches with all kinds of operations although I have found ways through all of them so far. Good luck.

It does not surprise me at all. Every new version of windows has increased levels of security and thus makes them less interactive friendly. Not having access to data source or knowing what program you are using to interact with it it is difficult to say. It will also depend on the version of the operating system you are using including services packs. Vista is more complicated then any other windows version as there are so many different versions of it for sale. It will also depend on the version of the software including service packs you are using to intereact with datasource.
It is highly likely that the April version of Vista is on a different service pack to the one bought more recently.

That said, the error message about width block variable not properly defined implies a bug in the interaction between the data source code and vista. I see these crop up a lot in my job from customers with a problem. With out access to the code to find the problem there is not a lot you can do.

Please note a lot of vista/ Office 2007 versions of Office programs have been extensively rewritten and are not going to compatible with a lot of 2nd party products that need to interact with them. Ie Excel 2007 now has a ribbon tool bar at the top and this uses a completely different way of interacting then tool bars in previous versions. also you no longer have the 63000 line limitation in Excel 2007.

Sorry if this is bad news, I would still try fiddling with your Internet settings and if you are using XL then you security settings there also. Tools | Macro |Security | set it to medium you may also need to do add a trusted sourec. Oh and if you want to know your operating system including service pack version then right click on the my computer icon and select properties from the drop down list. Under the system heading it will tell you what you have.

Dot.

Hi,

The Datasource Cd's were written and produced to run under Windows 2000 using IE5 (Internet Explorer 5) scripting and an Access database, though it will run on XP with IE6 occasionally throwing the odd error message, Vista on the other hand uses IE7 and some of the scripting "hacks" that worked with earlier versions just won't run under IE7, quite regardless of the operating system. Earlier versions of IE will not install on Vista. You could try an alternate browser such as Firefox as the default browser but I think the scripts that launch the CD are hard coded to use whichever version of IE is installed. Using Vista is generally a pretty dire experience, and having spoken to Microsoft, if you have a "Home" version of Vista, the only way to downgrade to XP is to buy a new copy of XP and then install it, of course you then need to have all the correct drivers etc. Ubuntu on the other hand is a free download that one can burn onto a cd and it just works, even just booting from the CD without actually installing the operating system.

Unfortunately my own CD shattered into a million pieces when I was using it last year, so I have no way of testing what will actually work. You should be able to open the database on the CD with Access if you have it or the Open Office equivalent (again free) but you will need to have the username and password which should be hard-coded into the script that launches the datasource application.

Sorry not to be of much help!

Mike

OK, are we dealing with a Datasource CD here or the online service? I just assumed online, which is what I use these days. I have the last issue of the CD but this is somewhat out of date now. Has the CD been reissued recently? I did not think AHR did that anymore.

You are all much more technically literate than I am obviously - but I am using a Vista PC to access the online Datasource service without a problem, so just curious. Alexia

Hi Alexia,

There is no problem with the online Datasource so far as I am aware as I use it myself. So far as I am aware the last CD issued was the 2001 version, there being no further CD's once the online system became available.

Ah yes, that would be the CD I have but no longer use - thanks for clarifying Mike. Alexia

I am using the CD rom version Arabian Datasource 2001 installed completely on my harddrive. Windows Vista Home Premium, automatically updated by Microsoft so latest service packs.
I am running it, (ArabDatasource), off the hard drive, not using the cd-rom.
Thank you to all who have responded, I have tried uninstalling it, then disabling anti virus programs and firewalls, reinstalling it, then rebooting, again disabling all firewalls, antiviral software, selecting run as administrator, shoosing XP compatable, all prior to opening it up for the 1st time after install. Still same error messages. I am wondering if there is a registry file I could edit>???? Thank you. cits

Hi, I had the same problem with my first CD (1996), when I upgraded my computer from Windows95 to W-98! I had to format (empty) the computer and then re-install W-98 and the AHR-CD, quite a big work!! Since then I don't buy the CD anymore, I subscribe for the online-version.. I found out that it's much better!
