My mare was checked last month by vet as in space of am to pm was moving muzzle to right and drooping bottom lip and not moving ear on left. No sign of injury, no scrape, bump ect but eating from other side too
Vet after examine said a trap nerve and will al go back to normal itself and cant treat with anything, she is eating fine using whole muzzle ect and ear now twitching but bottom lip now n then droopy still with top slightly still over to other side
Has anyone ever come across this before, vet said no pain ect and similar effect to numb after dentist, ive never seen this at all and quite concerned, i may get a 2nd opinion, she is fine in herself and much better than was and eating fine ect but does look strange though big improvement

YES ! A horse I had on loan years ago was given to me with facial nerve problems that the owner called "semigeminal nerve damage " now I think she meant "trigeminal nerve " ....anyway he did have a slightly odd expresion at rest, lip drooped to one side much more than the other side , and he was SO HEAD SHY it was unbelievable. and it took years , but eventually you could throw a headcollar on ...no problem. Now this problem used to come and go as the lip would tremble , so I knew it was starting , but it never became a problem for him eating or with riding /handling him , then....I had an osteopath treat him after he jumped out of his paddock (again!) and twisted himself on landing....she sorted his back ,neck and withers .....and the lip tremble was never seen again!! Was it due to the osteo ?? we will never know.I think as the nerves ( both sensory and motor)are in a very small space , and each horses face is different you will never see two patients present identically. but a second opinion is never a bad thing in medicine, especially veterinary medicine. Good luck do keep us updated........Polly |
