Has anyone had problems getting their mares in foal this year. My friend has sent 2 of her mares away to stud plus one belonging to a friend of hers. They've been gone for 4 months now and still don't know if they're in foal (if they are will only be in the last week or two). Hopefully they'll all come home at the weekend, then will be scanned at home. 2 of the mares are proven breeders and the 3rd was a maiden.

My mare who is a blatant hussy has refused to come into season all summer so we fetched her home and this month she has come in! Typical! |

Hi Had no problem getting 5 mares in foal in april/may but have had three mares that came in june and after and have not got in foal, two not cycling at all and the other kept returning. the one that kept returning is now in foal after three atempts but the other mare went home as owner wouldnt inject her and my other mare has had a pg shot today so hopefully that will bring her in. It must be the weather messing them up. |

Hi Cherie,
We have bred 7 mares repeatedly this year and only 2 are in foal,
This year has been so bad! I think the same as others have said, it is to do with the weather!
I know of many other studs that are having the same problems

We had no problem with our own mares, covered in April and May, but had 2 visiting that did take 3 months! (thought they were here to stay) the rest of the visitors went home within a month. My vet did say, when he came to scan that it has been a bad year for breeding, he put it down to the weather, could be true as it has been very much autumn like. |

This is very interesting thread as my 2 mares have just come back from stud. Barryh got in foal second attempt at AI confirmed in foal at 28 days, but Aliesha who was cycling with complete and utter determination got to stud and refused to come into season. She then did and went out of season almost the same day, and unsurprisingly didn't take AI. At 17 she is getting on a bit so I tried natural covering (she has previously refused to let stallion anywhere near her and has had 2 foals by AI before), she was amazingly covered naturally and was no problem but didn't get in foal. I have now tried another stallion The Wiking and although she is home I am going to scan next week at 18 days but hold little hope. If not in foal I'll leave it and consider next year, but very interesting others have had problems. Jumah has been coming into season practically every 10 days, extremely odd!

Hi, a mare that we had here did that, kept coming into season every 10 - 13 days, they usually do this when they have an infection but this mare took on the third season. |

We must have been incredibly lucky, as Tobago has got about 19 mares in foal, almost all by chilled semen, where you only get one 'shot' - and those AI'd with frozen semen got in foal at the first attempt as well.
We've even been lucky with 'difficult' mares, including a 20yo who had never taken by AI before, a mare who had failed to take even with fresh semen from another stally, elderly maidens, etc.
Mind you, some of them caused us quite a few sleepless nights - with erratic seasons that seemed to last about 5 minutes, not ovulating for 3 days after insemination, etc. All the vets are saying what an awful year this has been.
And I've just a week or so ago heard that one mare in Wales has reabsorbed - after taking at the first attempt with frozen semen. Fortunately they have two more straws so they are trying again.
But reading this thread I can't believe how lucky we've been.

I've covered 7 mares this year and got 5 in foal. One mare has been scanned and does have problems that hopefully can be solved. My old mare I haven't had scanned but she isn't in foal. One mare I sent away to stud. They covered her on 2 heats and no foal so she came home I covered her on the next heat and she got in foal straight away.

Well not that it helps any of you much but I'm glad its not just my friends mares, was beginning to wonder if they knew what they were doing at the stud. Think they're coming home this weekend, if they're not in foal now, then they'll stay empty till next spring, when 2 of them will most likely go to my friends own young stallion. She's just sorting out getting him licenced so he couldn't be used this year, besides she wanted him to use his brains before his B***s. He can't be used on her friends mare as they are full brother and sister. |

If there is any comfort for you, exactly the same has happened in the whole of scandinavia. Everyone I know has had the same problemsand it must hte very strange weather conditions!! Despite of that we have 11 mares in foal to Tehama Na Sidaqa - extremly thankful to Emma who let him come to us!!

I decided not to put any of my mares in foal this year and they have all been coming in season regularly and desperate to get at my stallion! They have been real tarts, never seen them so keen.
Typical, those that want don't get and mine are deseperate to be mated.

Must be weather as mine was cycling well early in season one mare from just after xmas, i covered natural covering a 3yr maidan in apr, she was covered once and in foal, the other a 9yr who had one foal 2 yr ago was ai with chilled apr and again straight in foal
The weather seemed to turn cold end May here even with snow storms into June, i think if mine wasnt in foal then more than likely they wouldnt have taken due to the eratic weather |

My mare took after the second attempt at AI. The vet said i was lucky to catch her in only 2 attempts. Their success rate for AI was only 60% this year compared to their usual rate of 80% |
