Could not resist I had the vet out today as my mare who was covered in the middle of April was for the first time since then showing signs of oestrus, though was not interested in the stallion. I am please to say that all is well and there is a nice big lump in there that is going to be a foal. While he was there I also got him to scan my on loan mare who should be about 31 days pregnant and yep there it was a little fuzzy white lump in a black clear whole.
So role on next year when I get my first two ever foals.....
On a slightly different subject for those with more experience in these matters if you want to breed from your mare again the following year when is the best time to cover them post foaling?
Dot.

Hi Dot,
Ideally on the foal heat - 2/3 weeks after foaling. If your mares are anything like mine, if you miss it, you then need to have her induced by the vet as she has become foal proud and is not coming in season!
As these are your first, I can recommend an excellent dvd from the states called "nature of foaling". Really put my mind at rest regarding what to expect and recognise a normal birth from an abnormal one (ie whether you should call your vet in an emergency or give him a call at a more decent hour of the morning to ask him to come and check the afterbirth and administer the first anti-tetanus jab).

Congratulations Dot at least you will have a break between foalings
Foal heat is usually 7 to 10 days post foaling but we find that is a little soon after foaling. We aim for 28 days post foaling - it gives mare time to heal and us time to get them swabbed etc.
