I have always owned gelding but 3 years ago I broke that rule and bought a mare. We had sooo many problems in the end I couldn't bond with her (I came off more times in 2 weeks than 20years of riding) so my confidence in mares in a little in tatters. The only reason I ask if people prefer one or the other is that am I being silly or just being nurotic? I have been told about a 11yo mare Chestnut with 3 White socks forward going but 100% in every way. She has just over come a nasty kick and they are asking £1500 inc all tack, do I break my no mare rule and go look?
Please help Aliners!!

Go on break the rule, I always had geldings. But my chestnut mare is the best thing since sliced bread!! She is my best friend and we have had our ups and downs but she is so clever and we understand each other perfectly.

Go on, break the rule, some of the best horses I have owned have been chestnut mares, still got one of them. Just because you didn't get on with one doesn't mean they are all the same, if you had had the same problems with a gelding would that put you getting another

I have to admit the mare was 4 years old and IDxTB and I was told she was broken in but green, it turned out that she had only been broken in 3weeks and they didn't tell me that when I bought her. I have to admit it wasn't her fault now I see the whole picture but it still makes me warey. trading standards are taking my case to court along with 10 other people against this dealer as I wasn't the first to have this done and not the first to complain. If they had been honest I would have still bought her but gone steady and carefully with her training and never had given her 7days off to settle in.

I lost my chestnut mare last month after having her for over twenty years. She never put a foot wrong and could never be replaced.

I say go for it - looking doesn't cost anything, she might be the horse of your dreams.....you will never know otherwise.

I have had a mare now for 7 years and a gelding before that. I could never bond with my gelding, but my mare would carry me to the ends of the world :D - I would say definitly go for it - i think that mares are an awful lot harder to get trusting you but once you have allowed them time, they become amazing companions. ok there are those times when they are mareish, but it is well worth those lovely moments when you feel like you could achieve just about anything with your mare. I would definitly look for a mare next time around.

And with the 'chestnut mare' rule, look at this way. Just because of superstition you get a cheaper horse!

Mine have always been mares, just gravitate towards them naturally. I would say keep an open mind, but then again that is hypocritical of me because I would always go for a mare first !

I think I will phone the mare owner tonight, my friend went to look at her and tried her doen the main road in local seaside town as she was an angel just the jog thing on way home! My friend chose not to have her as she has been mistreated by men in the past and is more of a ladies horse and she needs something calm enough for her husband to handle and ride too. Thats not a problem for me as my husband is more interested in shooting and vermin control with our terriers rather than horses!!

Give her a chance! I've had a chestnut mare for 16 years now and yes she had her moments but it's what makes her all the more endearing I wouldn't have her any other way! A friend of mine on the otherhand simply does NOT get along with mares...I think in so many cases it is a question of how you ride... "You may tell a gelding, ask a mare and suggest to a stallion" My friend usually tells everything & some mares just don't work that way!

I have had mares and geldings but lately all mares and I have never had a problem. I think they are more aloof but once you bond it's stronger. Although I have semi decided next time to get a gelding but mainly so Shida can have a boyfriend and thought she'd be less jealous of a boy but maybe i'm being silly!

i truly believe that you have to respect mares more and maybe treat them in a slightly different way - they are entire after all.

If you can see if you can trial her? i have a mare that is as sweet as ever but she can be nightmare to catch and has her quirks as in cant pull or trim without sedative, known to cow kick grooming her and if doesnt want to do anything will dig heels and point blank refuse to move

I personally get on with colts and geldings better but the only one i have here is the above mare

My o/h loves mares and has a anglo and apaloosa x tb though spotted in foal to spotted and anglo is crazy to ride as in hyper as hills though a v soft mouth she dances and grunts the whole ride and can nap/shoot off but quite as a mouse in every other way

If she sounds ideal do view her, i get on better with the boys but would always look at a mare if she sounds ideal

I've always had mares and 3 years ago my OH bought me a gelding for my birthday, I have to admit we haven't bonded in the same way as I do with my mares, really don't know why that is but I always say you can't beat a good mare

Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

I lost my chestnut mare in february after being together for nearly
18 years, we had our ups and downs, but mainly up's. She was the
light of my life and the mostintelligent horse I have ever known or
had. I always said *you could only fool her once*

She was a bit of a nightmare when I got her, she was 2 years old and had hardly ever been handled, so I ended up on the wrong side on a few occassions but she ended up being my best friend.

I have her son who is Chestnut and I love the bones of him, and in some ways has taken on her ways, but my
little chestnut mare is and was irriplacable.

She was not the prettiest Arab mare about, but she was the bravest,
lovingist, cheekiest, naughtist little horse I ever have owned.

Well the lady said to my friend she want the new prospective owner to have experience of arabs and to ride her several times a week for a few weeks before she will sell her. She was bought for her stable hand but the stable hand is only a young girl and not really ready for a forward going arab mare. They have only had her since february this year. I would prefer to have her on tial with me after the inital few week riding to see how she will cope riding away from the other horses at the livery yard.

I'd be cautious not because she's a mare, but because she's forward going (can often mean unpredictable and not an easy or relaxing ride) and because of the injury which surely means a blemish and probably some deeper injury if it's taking time to heal.

Also, they are selling her on rather too quickly for my instincts!

Nothing wrong with mares at all - they're not all stroppy! Remember too, that if you do have a mare and you ever had to claim loss of use (the injury?) you'd only get 60 per cent of her insured value because they insist you could breed from her.

Any pics or breeding information?

What the lady ment is she is too forward going for her stable hand who has ridden the more experienced riding horses but she is still a small girl and is nervous of handling her. The girl has never handled arabs or anything with spirit, the most sprited horses she has handled is a New forest colt! I have siad that she would be subject to a vetting before final sale is made.

I don't mind brighter rides as I have been ridding friends pure crabbit gelding who know two slow speeds jog trot and jog walking sideways!!!
As for her breeding I will find out when I visit on Sat. I'm going to look first then I will ride her on next visit.

But on the upside they seem concerned enough to ask you to spend time with her before they sell.

I dont think you have anything to lose Geena. The current owners seem concerned that she should go to the right owner and are giving you plenty of trial time. Perhaps on top of that you could have a trial period whilst she is first with you. The way I see it, we all have different personalities and so do horses, so there are bound to be some clashes.
Good luck (she will be a lucky mare!)

Go for it. I have a wonderful chestnut crabbet arab mare, we've had our moments, but then I did take her on as an unbroken 7yr old, but now we love each other to bits. Take her out a few times, if you like her, then get her vetted and in the mean time see if they'll let you have her at home for a week to see how she is away from the others. By riding her from her own stables first she will get used to you and hopefully the move to your own yard won't be so unsettleing for her. I wish you well. Please let us know how you get on.

The love of my life is a 13 year old Arab chestnut mare I bought as a green 4 year old...forward going, spooky...you name it, she does it (even bucks like a broncho), but I wouldn't be without her - she is my best friend. We have been through some incredible experiences together (like ending up backwards in a dyke full of water...!), but I trust her implicitly even with 2 white socks and she trusts me. She has also produced 3 of the most gorgeous foals...all retained at the Stud.

I would go for it, Geena. You won't be disappointed and by crickey, you will have a wonderful exciting time.
