As my mare is fleabitten grey and i was told that the colour of the specks of a fleabitten is the colour that the horse was born and my mares specks are black and bay which means she could have ben born black or bay but when do they usually start greying out?

Most of them start to grey out before 3 y/o.. some a bit later but that's very, very unusually! The 'flies' usually comes at the age of 10-15.

A friend of mine had a PBA mare who was a clear proper bay until she was 10 or 12 and then started to go grey, when she died in her 20's she was a dark dapple grey like most greys would be at about 5 or 6. Quite strange. I've never seen another one go grey this late has anyone else?

Moldequine - does your mare have a grey parent? If not at least one the offspring cannot go grey. (I'm presuming this is connected to the "unknown mares" recently queried ?)

My mare as a 7mnth foal

As a "pink" yearling

And heavily fleabitten at 9yrs:

She was almost white at 3 and at 6 had a few fleabites, but at 9 the fleabites have almost taken over. They are mostly red with a few black ones here and there???

Carla, xx.

Oh this topic is music to my ears!

I'm so hoping Po turns very fleabitten like your mare Carla, she is gorgeous!!

Here is Po around 7. Sorry I have nothing younger...maybe Delyth does?

...this is her last summer at 10...you can see how lighter she is and she has bites on her head, jaw and a little starting at the top of the neck...and where did that big beauty spot come from??

...this is her a few weeks ago...she is much lighter this year with more fleabites on her face, down her neck and now some on her shoulders...although, sorry you can't see that, but just to show you the change in coat colour this year...

I'll try to get a close up one of her before her summer coat comes out, but what do you guys think? Will she go very fleabitten...please, please, please, please! and if so, how long might this take?

Fee

PS Her dam was grey and sire bay and her fleabites are brown.

Sly (grey in my sig) was very dark - real brown/black for the first few years, then went through all the shades of dapple....he has gradually lightened up & at 14 he is really fleabitten Not sure if he will end up pure white like his sire?

Very interesting that when they go fleabitten, the bites are the same colour as they were born eg. chestnut, bay and my mares bites are bay and black and sian said mc natalie jabask was a bay/black mare.

Crikey Taylor, that is one of the most amazing colour transformations I have ever seen - are you sure it's the same horse LOL

Fee, I am sure Po will be a wonderful flea-bitten mare one day (in the not too distant future), and thank you, I love my girlie too. I can't believe her flea bites this year, they are amazing. Apparently they get more fleabites as they get older, she is only 9 and it will be so interesting to see what she'll be like at say 15!!! Perhaps she'll be pink again Incidentally, my mares sire is a lightly flea-bitten grey and her dam is dark bay/almost black???

Carla, xx.

My bay mare seems to be getting lots of white hairs mixed in all over the place. Her sire was Orashaan (grey) and dam Jiwana (Bay, still at 10, but I think Jiwana's sire was Maysoun (grey) if I remember rightly. Does anyone know whether greys are more prone to sunburn and melanomas and if so is it all greys or only "real" ones. Also 'scuse my ignorance but can arabs be born grey?

i KNOW GREY`S ARE MORE PRONE TO MELANOMAS AND ANYTHING WITH PINK SKIN IS PRONED TO SUNBURN AND MUDFEVER. NOT SURE ABOUT AN ARAB BEING BORN GREY, I DONT THINK THEY CAN BE BORN GREY I THINK THEY TURN GREY BUT MAY BE WRONG!
