Hi Judith, I've filled in some missing parts in her pedigree (d.o.b, colors, breeders etc.) for a starter! I saw that her sire is recorded in The Pyramid Society Group as Egyptian Bred (not straight) but he is considered to be a Russian. I'll dig out some more about the dam's side later!

Thanks Bia I was told her dam was imported from the US? Tessa is a funny little mare - bay quite ordinary to look at but she moves beautifully |

Hi Judith
I do not know anything about your mare's dam line other than Bask was exported from Poland to the States.
Charmer was born in Belgium and imported by Joan Ratcliff along with his half brother by Numizmat, Cordon. Cordon won a couple of races on all weather tracks. He was a big horse standing about 16 hh. I am not sure what became of him but I believe he went to Devon/Cornwall to Nuala Stevens. I bred a part bred by Cordon and sadly have lost track of him as well. Charmer I don't think ever raced although he did start race training with Lesley Hartley but caught a virus which left him with a heart weakness and he couldn't be ridden again. There is a Charmer who did race (I think Chestnut) Registered with AHS not to be confused with your mare's sire Charmer BASB.
Charmer is to all intents and purposes Russian bred. His pedigree contains some crabbet blood and his sire and dam was of course the straight Egyptian Aswan given as a gift to Russia, who carried strong early Crabbet bloodlines due to the Crabbet exports to Egypt. State Studs get to add additional lines and still call the horses Russian, Polish etc.
Charmer died about 4 years ago. He was about 15.2 hh and a very kind good looking horse.
We have a 71% Crabbet mare by Charmer who we would very much like to put to your Stallion, but I have too many horses kicking around at the moment and I would breed to keep, not sell!

Hi Di
thank you so much - BRILL info!! So you have a 1/2 sister to Tessa then? We've covered Tessa again with Rameed & are keeping everything crossed - she hasn't been back in season since....so will blood test her in a couple of weeks - won't scan her again as did it last year & she returned soon after being scanned infoal - the process upset her greatly - shes had many foals - several by Rameed & I don't think she had ever been scanned before! Would just love then to produce another Rowan Have also covered Polly our QH - so keeping all crossed there as well! Rameed is looking fantastic & it is hard to believe that hes now 19! Lets hope hes still raring to go next season!
I must take some decent photos of Tessa - she is very sweet - a lovely kind natured mare - she moves amazingly well - so does Rowan I really should take a photo of them together as they are like two peas in a pod -almost identical - except Rowan is about 15.1hh & Tessa is about 14.1hh!! they also have the same mannerisms etc!! Rowan is the only offspring that Rameed has produced that doesn't look just like him - chestnut with lots of white! Rowan is plain bay just like his mum |

Hi Judith,
Been a long day! I meant to say we had a mare out of a mare by Charmer - oops. Sorry to get you all excited for nothing! Our mare (chestnut)is by Dorian and her mum was by Charmer out of Glass Slipper. Sadly no more, but she was a beautiful mare with a wonderful temperament.
I hope you do get another Rowan. He might be just one in a million, but you never know. At least you have got the same blood and have half a chance of reproducing more of the same!!
We also put our part bred Arab(mostly Thoroughbred in fact - 12.5% Arab)to Charmer and produced a 16hh show jumper!! Very laid back chap. I know at least two by Charmer who are destined to eventually come out to do some endurance.
Good luck with the breeding!

Charmer was at stud at Claverdon in 1987/1988, I though he might have been on the beefeater scheme. Won at the AHS Ascot show that same year and also stood in 1989. Clare Hutchingson's Hooch(Moonshiner) is by Charmer, he was born the year all the foals got names of drinks and has done his fair share of Endurance, you might remember seeing him at Ludlow a few years back, a tall 15.3h grey. I have loads of pic of Hooch & found just the one of Charmer, which I'll post for you.Diktator (Charmer/Dik Dik) was living in Warwickshire and doing endurance, have pic. Also, in AHS No.79, is the article about Rafaat (Aswan), which might interest you.Claverdon bred & sold several of Charmers children there must be some about although there are few listed on allbreeds and Charmer is dead now.DR Bask rings bells for me,I think he features in the US Arabian World Mags. and of course Bask is in the pedigree of the Jabask horses. hope that helps a bit.. |

Hi
Charmer was bought from Arabica NV in Belgium and imported in 1985 by Joan Ratcliff. He is Registered in the Belgian Stud Book. He was a yearling. He lived at Claverdon Stud until his death. The last of his foals were born in 2001.
He had the following live purebred foals: 4 foals in 1988; 2 in 1989; 6 in 1990; 8 in 1991; 3 in 1994; 6 in 1996; 2 in 1997 and one in each year of 1998, 2000 and 2001.
Hootch (stable name) was bred by a friend of mine, registered as Moonshiner in 1996. He was about as laid back as they come! Haven't seen him for a couple of years. He had a full brother who sadly died.
Now I must get ready to go to work!
Enjoy the sunshine - it looks promising today.

Hello Sue
I will let you have a list of Charmer's progeny when I get home and have a few minutes.
I am sure I have a photo/picture of Charmer somewhere! Will have a search. I have no idea how to put on here so may need to scan it and send it to a private email address.
Just as a matter of interest, where is all your research leading?

Hi Folks, Well Charmers progeny must extend further than those listed on allbreeds at the mo..
I know and like both Diktator & Moonshiner & also Flickering dam of Flittermouze, & Ray from that way, so thought I'd like to see what others are about and what they've done or not. and since it was the Claverdon/Water Fm/Kadri etc that got the Beefeater going, though this one might have been part of that... OK hope that keeps you happy folks...Sue |

Well, I know that AHA Database has a lot of faults.. but I just copy the info as it shows there!
You can read about the despite between WAHO and AHRA (aka AHA) here:http://www.waho.org/History.html (Very much to read and interesting!!)
Some info from the site: "The imported mare *Bint Shaams AHRA #69605 was a grey, from two non-grey parents. Her sire El Sareei was bay, and there are many photos to prove it. Her dam Shams was registered as bay as a mature mare, and there are photos of both of her non-grey parents. *Bint Shaams was registered by the AHRA in 1970 for an AHRA board member."
How about that... eh, Grrrr! They (AHA) still haven't changed that mares color!!!
I've corrected 'Tessa's' color at Allbreed!

I remember seeing Bask Juanita at the Rumbolds Stud, we went to see their stallion San Antonio(Aladdinn son they imported from America at the same time)Juanita was a sweet looking small compact dark bay mare, looked like photos of Bask. Don't know what happened to the stud they weren't around long. |

I don't supposes anyone can turn up any piccies of her sire/dam? I would be very interested to see what they look like - esp her dam! Her son that I have whos now 9 is the absolute spitting immage of her - even down to his little ways - just like his mum! Whats interesting is that shes had several other foals by Rameed - who all are chestnut, lots of white & just look like dad (as have many other foals out of different mares ! Which is why the breeders didn;t bother to register Rowan as they though he was very plain & wouldn't ammount to much
I will take some photos of Tessa & Rowan! |

I remember I took a short bit of video of Bask Juanita but not sure if I still have it, it must have been 20yrs ago! I'll dig about in my ancient old tapes and see if I can find it when I get time. Juanita was heavily infoal at the time to a stallion she'd been put to in US before import. I also seem to remember, could be wrong, that Contessa and her half sister R Arousa by Arakan were in one of the Newbury Arab sales. I think Phoenix Arabians had Arousa for a bit, maybe they saw her mother/have photos? There were pics of Charmer in Claverdon adverts in AHS mags. I'll see if I still have some I took of him as a youngster. here is Numizmat his sire in Belgium

Oh thanks Kerry Tessa looks nothing at all like her sire - so must be like her dam?? The folk I had her & Rameed of (bit like buy one get one free!) said her dam cost something like £12,000 when she was imported all those years ago..........or were they exageratingLOL
Di - no photo - did you do it on the internal AL email as this doesn't often work?! Try: judith.stirling1@btinternet.com !!! |
