Hi We have acquired a lovely horse (gelding) who may be an anglo-arab or a pure bred (but as I know very little about arabs, I am quite happy to be proved wrong !!!), who is supposed to have been imported from Belgium and who has arrived without any papers or name but he does have a brand mark on his nearside hindquarters, just above the stifle, which looks like 90 above 244. There are also some very indistinct letters above the brand which may be xs..... We think the number is correct but as he is a flea-bitten grey it is very hard to tell, even when he is bathed. Our dentist has checked his teeth and puts his age in the 11-13 region. Does anyone out there recognise this type of brand mark? He is a lovely moving and well mannered horse, eager to please and has the most balanced, elegant paces with a big jump. He also is quite happy to give a show (20mtr circles, serpentines, etc) and is quiet in the heaviest of traffic. His one "quirk" is that he doesn't like to be left alone in our barn stabling arrangement, so at the moment we have to have something in another stable to keep him company. It seems a shame that a genuine horse like this does not have a history so any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Hi, and Welcome!
I know that in Poland they call Anglo-Arabs XO, maybe that XS you see is in fact XO?? Don't know if Poland use brand marks though.

Hi Judith Thanks for taking the time to read my posting. We are in Rudry, just outside Cardiff and have mostly Thouroughbreds and Welsh Cobs. It's a real shame about this horse but I think we are going to keep him and just take things as they come. |

Hi Bia Thanks for taking the time to read my posting and we have had another look and it could be XO rather than XS. Any ideas where I could find out about brand marks - I have spoken to Freeze Mark in this country and although they were very helpful, they don't have any records of individual stud or country brands. I shall just keep on trying to find out something about him as he is a really nice horse and I expect that we shall keep him - especially now that my daughter has named him "Gorgeous George" and had his name embroidered on her jacket!! Our biggest problem is that we have never had an Arab before (we have Thoroughbreds and Welsh Cobs and point to point and show in hand and under saddle) and he is, so far, very willing and anticipating of everything we do that I keep on looking for the "catch". |

We once had an Arab owner on here who had a horse which had been branded while with the Army. How big is your horse? Could he have been used by the Army - could be any country - in any way? He sounds well trained and desensitised to traffic/noise etc. Can you post a photo? |

Maybe you should ask some of the horse dealers who import horses from abroad. I can think of at least a couple, who bring horses in batches every month. might be a general brand used abroad. I'm still wondering what the person you bought him off told you about the horse and where he came from etc.etc.if he came in to this country surely he would have had some paperwork.
Also, some of the Blood Farms brand all their horses, just to keep tabs of them, I think Farmkey used to do the ones down south, a bit like some of the Charities branding theirs. Just while were on this subject here's a link.http://www.horsedata.co.uk/horse_brands.htm
towards the bottom of this link there is a few contacts that might be worth asking.. |

My pal bought a horse today, to our surprise, the passport confirmed he was chipped, was a TB and had raced as a 3yesr old, all news to us as we looked over the horse, only came to light when he was paid for. |

I'm pretty sure the brand relates to year of birth and foal number.
Some of the large breeding farms and groups on the continent use a brand like this to identify foals |
