Veracruz is probably one of the horses who were saved after the big fire in the stables of the duke of veragua. If I remember there was some kind of war and his stables and horses were burnt down, the ones who escaped were recognised by the duke and I think they had a brand on their body to state they were his.But since the papers also got lost in this fire non of the remaining horses were registered anymore. Thats why they are on paper bred by the duke of veragua, because they new they were purebreds and CRABBETS, at least most of them I think. Monique |

The Veragua stud was destroyed during the Spanish civil war: many horses died and all the documentation lost. However, some mares survived, but without their IDs: it was possible to verify that they had come from the Veragua stud, but not *who* they were (all were grey, I believe). It is known that they were a mix of Spanish breeding plus Skowronek, but beyond this, it is not possible to be more certain: that is why they appear in the studbooks as 'Veragua mares'.

I did an article on Veragua horses in an old AHS news..... may even be ten years ago now..... Their pedigrees do turn up as unknown, as Keren says the ID's were lost when the Duke's house was burnt down in the Spanish Civil War in 1936. However one groom remained with the mares in the corral and his testimony was taken as proof that the horses who survived (some starved to death, the stallion Razada was shot as target practice) were all purebred. Some mares were successfuly re identified but their foals born during the war were not, but were all renamed with the Vera- prefix.
As mentioned the Duke brought several Skowronek daughters from Crabbet so they are assumed to have a high percentage of this blood.
The Verana branch has been most phenomenal, including Estopa and Navaronne P. Hashemiya, our best producing Spanish mare was also from this line. |
