My 23 year old has developed mastitis, one teat is swollen and very hot and is milking curd like puss. I've started her on anti b's and some pain relief but read on the internet that castor oil massaged into the teat will draw the puss - anyone heard of this ?

It's odd that it has blown up today as my other mare is due to foal today and is showing no signs what so ever of parting with her baby

My 32 year old had this in june just after the welsh mare foaled we used tetracycline and iv antibiotics (penicillin), the vet just said he could'nt explain it just that her hormones must have gone up the shoot, the lab tests came back ok.

Aaaahh poor girl!!! I can sympathise, I had it myself many years ago - so painful!!

Anti-b's will get rid of the infection but massage will help to relieve the pain. I think the castor oil will help with the physical massage, to lubricate the action as opposed to friction!!! I don't think castor oil actually helps to draw out the puss, the massage should do that.

Agree that it must be a hormonal reaction, it's amazing how they react to other mare's hormones.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Carla, xx.

Edited to say: You should use a "milking" action - as if you were milking a cow. So start massaging at the top end of the udder to "draw" the lumpy bits down and break them up. Gently work towards the teat and very gently pull the ends of the teat to remove the puss. You probably already know this though, sorry

Thanks for the advise. I hope by tomorrow once the anti'b & pain killer have had time to do some work her udder will be softer. I gave her a good clean with baby wipes this evening and god love her she raised her leg to let me get in even though it must have been so painful for her
