I know a lot of people must have had the same problem - Short backed, wide withered, no shouldered horse with a forward girth line - we now had an idea on fit for my mare the wintec cob in extra wide fits but even with a point strap it moves up her neck so she bucks and it moves more. I think in the past the girth has been done up really tightly to stop this as she is cold backed to a saddle but is happy to be ridden/jumped etc bare back and with surcingles/rug straps. Other than using a crupper which I have no qualms about if it is necessary what could I use to stop the saddle slipping. A limpet pad was suggested any other recommendations - PLEASE!!!!!

Hi

Have a look at this: http://www.spottedmule.btinternet.co.uk/mule/breeching.html - the breeching works really well - I've used it in the past with rump high - forward girthline Arab mares & it worked a treat! Prob not any good for showing - but excellent for everyday riding.

The photo of the lady on the grey Arab is Helen Newton on Carly - she posts on AL sometimes.

In the past I've tried different "sticky" pads - none worked as well as the breeching. I've sold mine - otherswise you could have tried it. I found my horses didn't object to it.

i find limpet pads arent so good if the saddle really slips. im using a nuumed full wool numnah at the moment till our new saddle comes and it seems to work a bit otherwise i swear id be under his tummy the whole time! an atherstone girth is better than a regular one too with elastic ends for girthy horses like mine he doesnt seem to get so tense when its done up

I know what you mean, one of my mares is like this and it is a nightmare to solve. I have shied away from using a crupper as I wonder how comfortable it must be. But other endurance folk use them all the time for long distances and as someone pointed out to me, it can't be any more uncomfortable than the saddle moving over her shoulder.
I recall from some years back that the chap from Free n Easy saddles used to address this, maybe on the website or in a leaflet. I think he sold a breeching system?
The only think I can also suggest is using one of the sticky pads to make a girth sleeve as in my mares case, it was the girth sliding forward taking the saddle with it. The saddle pads do help a little, also with the lateral movement but I found she got very sweaty underneath.
I got a point strap fitted to her saddles and use this and the third strap. I also got flair fitted to both showing and endurance saddles (not that she does both at the same time!) and I think this helps make the saddle a bit more comfy when it does slide forward as there is less digging in of the shoulder blade.
Good luck!

im currently haveing a saddle made. my horse has big shoulders which seem to pick the saddle up and move the saddle forward. she also has a forward girth line and a very straight back. weve found that all saddles sit off her back at the back and so the one we have ordered will have an extra deep gusset and a point strap. iv had difficulty in ordering, i want to show but i also want to jump so iv had to go for a gpd cut with a gp knee roll if that makes sense? unfortunatly i cannot afford two saddles!!

Sarah

short backed, barrell ribcage, very forward girth line, - been there - oh bu**er, still there

Linnette is correct about the chap from free n easy website - I was reading this the other day. Have a look as he does explain it.

I have come to the conclusion - after buying and trying the following

gel pad
limpet pad
elastic girths
very very expensive sci girth (to hold girth where you put it to stop it moving)

conclusion - the pressure is still there - saddle and girth is still trying to move forward, the pad and the girth may keep the saddle where you originally put it BUT it still exerts a lot of pressure on the shoulders and the girth area. My mare is now very very girthy and not happy about having a saddle and girth on.

Good luck

Sarah - I've been there, got the Tee-Shirt! If you want to talk it over & I might have some very good ideas - you can email me: judith.stirling1@btinternet.com or phone 01591 620211.....sometimes talking rather than email is easier!

I am about to order a saddle from the US that is very adjustable....want to try it well on my lot before saying anymore - but I think it will be very good!!!

Saddles seem to be the topic of the week! Honeymonster - Kofi was exactly as you descibe!
I tried a FreenEasy which needed a crupper (the crupper itself was from US and very comfortable with soft neoprene cover) but saddle still slipped. So not the one for us despite a good trial.
We now have a Reactor Panel which fits and doesn't slip, needs no pad or crupper.
I'm afraid it's trial and error with this particular combination :(
