YO told us tonight that we had 1o days to move the horses, because he needs the fields for his cattleCan he do this,he advertises as a livery yard in the local vets, but only seems to need the income in the winter,it has been obvious for a while that he wants us off his fields,so he can fatten cattle, last week he moved our horses without telling us into a field with no water. When we complained he seemed pleased, which we were perplexed by,we now know that it was his way of trying to get us to leave. What should we do,I am worried leaving the horses there,as he is a nasty character

move..and ASAP!!!! just get the horses and go! Don't give him an excuse to hurt them (not that I'm saying he would, but you never know)
If you had a contract with this man..he should have given at least one months notice.....or the period of notice required in your contract. If you don't...then he can do as he wants! |

Oh you poor thing ! My closest friend was given 2 days notice to leave the private yard she was on and another friend was told to leave there and then (she had been at the yard ~ a proper livery yard and riding stables ~ for almost 8yrs ). So sadly, yes I think he probably can. Livery yards are a flippin' nightmare, hope you can find somewhere else quickly.

Please get a contract next time. My horses live on a friend's farm, who I trust totally and he (i am pretty sure) trusts me totally, but we still have a contract so we know exactly where we both stand. Hope you find somewhere nice |

What a nightmare, it dificult enough finding a suitable yard when you have plenty of notice, but 10 days. I really hope you can find somewhere, if only as a stop gap, till something else comes up. Maybe worth putting it about as to what he's like, to save others the same problem next year. Years ago we were kicked out of a yard with NO notice (the owners daughter complained about us, but later we were vinicated (sp) but by then too late), we had 4 horses to find somewhere for. Luckly for us someone knew of someone who could take us in, but with no transport and 3 of the 4 being unbroken it was a nightmare moving them all in the dark.
I wish you well. |

Mad arab that happened to some friends of ours, they had a disagreement about the treatment the vet had commnced with one of their horses, YOs daughter (who thought she knew everything) told them the vet was wrong! They politely told her to keep nose out, next thing 'take your horses and go' with less than an hours warning!
They found a stop gap place but was certainly no fun moving her little herd!
They now have a livery yard of their own, and treat all liveries like family. |

Thanks everyone for your comments. We moved this morning to a new yard with much better facilities I have never felt so relieved to leave somewhere. Christine thats interesting, because your friends story is just like ours, although the YO said he needed the grass for his cattle,he has got a spoiled brat of a daughter, who I had criticised just the day before for cruelty to her 3year old Shetland pony.I am worried about leaving it actually as we were the only people who ever gave it food and waterOur vet had commented on how cruel it was for it to be penned up in a dirt only ,no grass tiny enclosure ,with no company, she is a sorry sight and I had repeated this to her father with her present, but of course she knew better than the vet,or anyone for that matter!! I think now that they wanted us away, because we knew too much and voiced our concerns |

Now that you have moved, you could report the other people for neglecting their pony. At least you will have done something......... shame you couldn't take the little one with you, sounds like it needs some TLC. If I was your vet I would have brought it to the attention of the authorities by now though.
Hope you settle at your new home and glad you found somewhere nice.

My two were high as kites tonight with the journey, new surroundings and all the new horses, but Im sure they will settle and I might be able to sleep tonight! |

Mybe try ringing the ILPH and maybe also the RSPCA, all helps, though moving yards does take abit of time to settle in and getting used to things, ect. but worth thinking about ringing them, as email might not get ot them or something, and it also means because they have talked to someone on the phone, they might do more to help, if you get what i mean, Well done and Good luck with everything Jenni
