The title says it all really - don't let the last bit put you off, I am still counting the day as a complete success!
It was only a short one, about 11-12 miles, but after severing cartilage, and artery and nerves from his coronet band to his heel last year, it is a big thing for us!
Jack is my 5 year old gelding, my first youngster, first arab, and I backed him myself.
Yesterday, our friend Alison brought over one of her gee gees to ride out with us, and Jack loved her horse Taz immediately. They both behaved impeccably all the way round (except one mild tantrum by Jack when Taz walked off and left him (traffic jam, two cars, 2 arabs, 4 riding school horses, very narrow lane), but then still obeyed my leg aids to passage through a 1.5m gap, much to the terror of the cars inhabitants, 1 foot from dancing horse! )
We walked, trotted, cantered (no bucking) both in front, next to and behind, with no complaints, through familiar, not so familar and completely new routes.
We jumped a tiny bar about 10-12" off the ground - I thought we'd just trot over it, but he did a lovely, calm and settled little jump, and I was beaming from ear to ear Our first jump!!
We sat and drank half a shandy at a pub in the middle of a busy crossroads, with cars, barking dogs, cyclists and even a horse and cart, and they were very settled, just munching the grass verge.
Then about a mile from home, I scared him with my map (first it flapping in the wind, then to stop that as it was scaring him, I scrunched it together - obviously, that just meant that the predator he'd just seen hovering above his withers had roared its attack) and I didn't have a hope of staying on. I landed hip first (judging by the bruises), and also have bruised and swollen inner thigh, lower leg, foot, and various cuts and scrapes on my back. I hit my head too, and still have headache. Alison caught Jack, who hadn't gone far, and we walked a little way, then I got back on, and neither Jack nor I were scared, so aside from maybe a cracked rib, no harm done!
The fall wasn't his fault, and I am just so proud of my little boy! Can you tell?!

Well you're still alive then?
Yeah, Jack behaved really well, a really cool, confident young man, you should be very proud of him & of yourself for training him to be so brave (paper excepted!).
Can I just ask for you to do a little "map desensitisation" before our next ride so I don't have to worry you're dead ever again....?

Lmao, which hurts!
Sorry Alison.... yes, I promise, de-sensitisation to maps. The silly thing is, I'd just done that a few days before with a crisp packet rustling all over him.... I guess maps are different!
Thanks for the nice words though. If I ever get him trained as well as Taz is, THEN you can say well done properly! |

Sounds like a good day, despite the splat incident!
Another tip: don't wear flappy jackets or loose flourescent tabards when on board either unless your horse is really used to it... same result! Monster! And it's bright yellow! GETITOFFOFMEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Ouch Kelly
Are you still wanting to try Jack with the bike at the weekend or are you taking a little step back and concentrating on maps?
Get in touch if you want us to come round. |

Oww! But like you said it wasn't Jacks fault...bless him (you can always rely on a human to mess things up (only kidding Kelly!) Well done though sounds like you have a superstar in the making (just have to write a 'monster' check list of potential scaries!!) |

Hi again everyone!
Thanks for your replies and sympathy! Yes, falling off is inevitable, I just wish that my first time in at least 13 years (and from the highest I've ever fallen) hadn't been onto 3-4" stones packed into a rut in the road.....
I still have a slight headache (felt a bit sick this morning), but can walk normally but gingerly today - have to be careful as my ribs twinge. But I can get trousers over my hip, so that's an improvement!
I got talked into going to A & E yesterday as I was very aware of my right eye, so called the NHS helpline who told me to go. When I got there, I had a brief chat with the doctor who made me follow a light with my eyes, listened to my breathing and then told me it was just post concussion stress, touch look about my ribs, and basically made me feel like I'd wasted his time. Won't be going back there!
I went on a tiny ride last night, just to check neither of us was worried, and we weren't, but I will give it a few more days I think! |

Kelly! I can't believe the doctor wasn't very sympathetic! Surley its always best to get these things checked to be on the safe side!
I am also amazed that even bruised and battered your still managing to get in the saddle! I struggle when my jeans are too tight - god knows how I would manage if I had a cracked rib!
I hope your getting plenty of TLC at home!

well done to kelly and jack!! i know i replied as same in the email, but i really am very rpoud of you both!!
it's great to have someone buy one of our treasured babies and do so much right by them. it's also great to get the regular updates of what you are both up to.
hope the map desensitisation goes well. kknowing jack he will probably look at you as though it's nothing at all and doesn't understand what the fuss is about lol at least the map doesn't sreach and cluck at him! we have just got a chicken with 3 chicks and put then in the turnout at home. odin hasn't been fromally introduced but he does keep coming to the door, when marge goes off on one, and looking like it could be the devil himself that is in there lol
jack should be fine with the loading, we never had any probs with him. but if something does come up just give me a shout if you need to.
looking forward to the next jack and kally instalment.

Hi Bev
I've tried to email you when I finally realised you'd posted your contact details, but for some reason it refused to deliver my email!
I know it's short notice, but if you read this and are still available this weekend, please could you get in touch on 07790 615139.
I don't know when you're moving, or if you now have plans for the weekend, so don't worry if you can't make it anymore! I'll go up to the Flappit and make him watch from the moors!
Thanks |
