Goldie has suffered an injury over the weekend that has left him very lame. I have him on bute. He had 2 cc Sunday 2cc then I've dropped him down to 1 cc. I've never used bute before. Mainly because I have never had to. How safe is it and how long can I use it?
I'm having the vet put this afternoon to look at him so he should tell me. I hope Goldie pulls through this ok. He's my baby and it's awful to see how lame he is.

Hope your vet is helping. I have Bute in sachets of powder so I couldn't equate the liquid equivalent. I can imagine your anxiety about him. I hope he's better. The Bute will help the inflammation and I'm sure some arnica in tablet form (gel is good too if the skin isn't broken) will also help to relieve the bruising. Let us know how he is. |

I use sachets too, but my vets say that a course of bute even in a reasonably high dose is completely safe. If a horse is on it 'for life' say for arthiritus or suchlike then I was told that eventually it can cause liver damage, but we are talking years of use, not weeks!! My boy was on bute for several months when he was ill and a high dose too. He seems to have suffered no ill effects. |

I sure do miss my vet in the UK. These country vets here are useless. I called my local vet and when they finally got back to me they tell me that they only know simple things in lameness. How bad is that. What did they learn in vet school? They did put me in touch with another vet though that has a portable x-ray machine. She can't come out till tomorrow Thursday. Goldie isn't moving much on his leg but he is putting a little weight on it. Still keeping my fingers crossed.

Sue I hope your boy gets better soon! We've been quite lucky (touch wood) and have only ever had Pasha on a weeks course of bute to reduce inflammation... there is no better healer than time |

Goldie has been referred to an Equine hospital today. His leg looks a little better but the vet is worried about the fetlock. He is staying there for a few days and tomorrow they may flush the joint out. The vet said he had a lot of trauma to his leg and has given me the worse case sinerio (sp). So I've got all my fingers crossed that he comes out of this ok. He is my baby and I've had him for 19 years so he's like my child. I'll keep you all informed of his progress.

The vet called today and said Goldie was walking a lot better today. Thank goodness. He is going to take a couple of ex-rays to make sure the bone is fine. But so far it's looking good for him.

I have heard that bute can cause gastric ulcers.
Hope Goldie continues to improve, it must be hard for you when you can't be there in person, stay strong! |

Hi, my vet gave me danoline it is the substitute, without the bute as so to speek, this does not apply to short term use but I can cause liver damage. Donna |

Short term it is fine I believe, but as others have said it does cause liver damaged when used as a long term treatment. We have a 38 year old pony on our yard and she has been on it since she started with arthritis (about 10years ago) and saddly we found out last summer that it has caused damage to her liver and kidneys. She has had to come off the bute although her owner does give it to her occasionally if the ground is hard or she is looking particularly sore.
Hope Goldie makes a speedy & full recovery |
