We've added our trailer to the horse insurance with NFU. Not sure how much it costs as all added together.

Mine is insured with NFU in with the cost of the horse insurance not sure how much will look later.

Bulldog wheel clamp on the rear wheel so they can not just tilt the trailer to tow it and a lock to go in or round the towing ball is an added deterant.

Sorry to put a damper on things...but get the best insurance you can, NFU or South Essex are excellent. But don't rely on wheel clamps, locking mechanisms or such like. Consider a tracker! Mark the roof with ID, and engrave ID on the chassis, and framework, even put personal Signwriting on the panels. Ours was a brand new, Ifor Williams 510, with all best locking systems, clamps to protect etc. and it got stolen in the middle of the afternoon during the week.

If 'they' want it they will take it - simple as that. The police are useless even if they have descriptions, registrations etc, also totally useless when called seeing the thieves in the area again.

Our trailer was distinctive, if I ever see it, I will not hesitate to reclaim it, wherever it is, with or without horses on board. Because if anyone has bought it believing a legitimate sale they must have documents, not just a bill of sale, to prove ownership and I have. Too many people buy trailers and have them reclaimed! Be warned.

Years ago some friends of mine found another friends trailer at a show, stayed with it, called the police!!!!! eventually got it escorted back to the 'users' premises, unload the horses, ascertained the apparent innocence of the 'well known to be dubious' users, and recovered the trailer to its rightful owner, 15 months after it was stolen!

Hope you never have the stress of theft, or damage but safeguard yourself and your horses in every way possible.

Cant agree more Brenda!

Back in 1997 we had our trailer stolen - not a particularily smartone! in fact we were in the middle of hand painting it - and it had 3 different colours on it!

It also sported a couple of distinctive "denges!" - and i always said if
it was till in the country - i would find it one day - and i did!

Just over twelve months later about 10 miles from home! - with a few super modifications & and a smart paintjob!

It was missing all its "plates" and numbers - But i knew it was mine - and if necessary would have been able to "forensicly" prove it!

The new owners had bought it in good faith - but never questioned the missing plates - paperwork etc!

The police tried to tell me it would have to go to court - for "me" to prove ownership (the owners were friends of the local seargent and they serviced all the police cars at thier garage!)

I spoke to my solicitor (luckyly my sister works for a "large" firm!) who said i will send them a letter in tonights post - pointing out they should return it within 48 hours and that we would be charging them a "daily fee" if they didn't.

Needless to say - it came back fairly quickly!

I did feel sorry for the poor people that had bought it, (although they had wondered about a couple of things at the time - but dismissed it as they were getting a Bargain!) - not really when they lost all their money 12 months later!

Moral of the story - only buy trailers from reputable sources - and insure them well (mine wasn't!) - and secure them well (and make sure your measures are adequate for your insurance co!)

thanks brenda
reason for asking is we had one stolen couple of years ago so know its a bore
they just ground the padlock off the clamp and attached a chain to the hitch and drove through the (closed) gates

I agree with those who suggest a roof security code, etc etc PLUS get a 'T' bar made - two lengths of RSJ or similar welded together, the crossbar being greater than the width of the trailer 'A' frame. You then make a box section of steel that you concrete into the ground, drop the 'T' in when the trailer is parked & padlok the two together using a security padlock with no accessible locking bar. It may not completely stop them, but at least it prevents them lifting it onto a flatbed with a HIAB - yes, it has ben done!!!!

My ex made a superbo hitchlock for my old trailer (after it was stolen/recovered), but when I sold it to get a lorry, like an eejit I let the hitchlock go with it

Bit rushed at work but here's an extract from a story I did about my neighbour's stolen trailer, an Ifor Williams 510 taken in spite of lock, postcode on roof and a flat tyre!!

You might like to ring Sue Burns to ask more about the mobile phone tracking device. It's dirt cheap and sounds quite sensible!

"Details of the theft have been registered with trailerwatch.com, the nationwide theft alert website, and the Ifor Williams central HQ whose inspectors will be looking for the stolen trailer.
Thames Valley Horsewatch police coordinator for Oxfordshire, Acting Sergeant Sue Burns, said: "There is an industry in equine trailer theft and in particular this kind of trailer as they are a good product, hold their value and are easily resellable.
"Some get taken to Ireland and some go to auctions. Locally they would be Henley in Arden, Reading Sales and Southall Sales.
"There are companies who travel the UK selling horsey equipment in villager hall sales and they advertise that they will buy Ifor Williams trailers. There is a ready market for disposal and unfortunately most are not insured so the owner really loses out. I would estimate there was a significantly less than 50 per cent chance of this being returned."
Ms Burns said trailer owners should consider having tracking devices fitted or signing up to a very inexpensive web-based tracking system which involves concealing an old mobile phone in the trailer which the company will then track, as long as the battery is kept charged.
For more details contact Ms Burns on 08458 505505."
