Hello all
Ive recently bought an old side saddle (used to compete years ago and loved it) its in need of quite a major restoration before i can use it but fingers crossed will be great when done.
Does anyone know of any saddlers that they would recommend for the job? Im in Lancashire but could always send it away to be repaired.
Can't wait to get it all done and see if my mare likes it! Sure she will she has great paces and is very forward going
Carol

Hi
Have you looked at the master saddlers web site? they might be able to help they show saddlers that are all over the country and any saddler worth their salt would be registered with them.

I know a saddler in Kent who does a lot of side saddle work. Her own mare is shown under side saddle and does very well. If you want to email me I can give you her number if she's not very far away. She made my pony'e made-to-measure 'normal' saddle and it is beautiful! And very reasonably priced. |

If you call Roger Philpott at the Midland Sidesaddle Association (he's a world expert on side saddle) at Pittern Hill Riding Centre, Kineton, Warwickshire he will definately be able to help you. He gave me some very valuable side saddle tuition! He will know everyone there is to know, all around the UK. I'll try to find the number for you.

Hi Dinkidoo,
It'd be great to see some photos when you get the saddle all sorted, if you don't mind - its something I'd love to do with my mare at some point in the future.
Many thanks

MinHe you are right, Huline-Dickens taught me Saddlery at Cordwainers 20 years ago, he is a good side saddle specialist and as a Saddler myself, we don't always get to work on side saddles, I have done a few but usually steer clear of them if I can! Austin....... |

...just to let you know Roger Philpot (The Best in side saddle tuition) will be doing lessons at Cheshire. I had alesson with him at his yard in Kineton Warickshire. He also has on the yard a side saddle and repair shop. If you go on also go on sidesaddleassociationarea11.co.uk.....you can get some usefull imformation there, as well as the lesson that roger is doing,,he is fantastic,,,very "old school" teachings,,which are the best. |

Ooh that sounds good, where abouts in cheshire? I rode side saddle for years and competed at quite a high level so will be just a matter of brushing up on my skills! (i hope) The main reason i stopped - apart from my scatty mother 'lending' my saddle out which i never got back - was my leg used to go really really dead! Im hoping it may not be as bad these days but i used to slide off and hop round for 10 mins getting the feeling back in it! We loved to do side saddle to music and dressage it was really enjoyable and a lot of the time at unaffiliated shows i would compete side saddle in hunter ponies and workers.
Arabian Girl - How did you enjoy riding to the 'side'?! |

I saw two beautiful classes at Warrington show ,,soooo elegant and refined so that got me quite interested,,further to that i went to Tatton show , were some of the competitors from the Warrington show were doing a demonstration. You could go and sit on the side saddle that was on a frame,,which in itself was interesting if you never have sat on a side saddle. From then they were doing a trip to rogers yard (warickshire ) and it was with the side saddle association area 11. met at the stables in Cheshire and got on a coach.... I liked side saddle although its not my main interest , i was curious....Rogers horses were beautifully schooled. He would ask me to reign back at "C" then ask for canter, which his horses did . Walk and Trot was a doddle,, but i must admit canter seemed "wierd" (sp) as i felt i had to "rock" diagonally in my saddle to keep in the rythm of the canter ,, you will know what i mean...so i found that strange.....For the advanced riders that were there he had them jumping,,some quite big fences may i add!!!!Lots of the side saddle riders said they dont feel comfortable riding astride and that they always ride "Side"......take a look on side saddle association area 11 ....web-site because thats who i went with and the details of rogers lesson is on there...hope this is of some help.....Lynne |

Hi Brenda!
How are you and Vicky?
Yes very long time no see! I had a baby girl - did you know? She's nearly six months now, we called her Isobel Amelia. We're selling the farm at auction on 18th April It means all of us working every hour just to keep the place going and just feel that it would be best if we just had a 'normal' ish life for a few years. We are staying up here though as really like it and we both have good jobs. Mum is back in Atherton though, has been since Isobel was born. We hope to be back on the circuit later on this year, won't be at the early shows but may make the Classic and fingers crossed for Malvern!! Hopefully buy a little box with the proceeds of the sale Also going to be doing some dressage and side saddle if i get it repaired in time. What are you guys upto?
Lynne - ive looked at the website it looks great - won't be able to make the session on 13th but will keep my eyes open for future events.
