Pastures new
This week is so strange for us and the horses. After 27 years we had to move the horses somewhere else (which is a long story and a sad one). A task which was harder than we had envisaged. Eight weeks ago we started looking, but finding the right place was a nightmare. Keba is 32 and has spent her whole life in the same field; she is blind in one eye and has bad arthritis, so it was important that she did not go into a situation where she would be bullied. Also to get her onto and be transported in a trailer would be a task in itself, as she has not travelled in one for 17 years. Marafia adjusts to anything so everything was set around Keba. We searched high and low, and fate led us to a 14 acre field very close to where they were. So at 6am on the 1st of April Operation Pastures new began. We put head collars on the horses and with a vehicle escort walked them to their new home. Both horses were great and we only met a few cars on the way. The field is huge and is split, part of which two other horses are in Gyp and Daisy. When in their part of the field our two put on the finest display of what an Arabian is, even Keba. Though an electric fence was between them you can imagine the scene squeals and grunts, high tails, prancing and running. But the biggest surprise was that Keba became head horse, protecting Mara and putting on the best show. It was wonderful to watch. Our Daily routine has changed slightly, I get up a bit earlier, have a further carry with things but such is life, the horses have a great new home. The owner of the land let me build a field shelter onto the existing stable and is happy for us to make any improvements we want so it is not too bad. The only downside is water; we have to carry it in. However in the field there is a fenced of pond, rich in wildlife so I am going to get a water quality check done and if this is ok pump water into a large 800 litre storage tank. So fingers crossed everything works out. It would be great if we had the money for land of our own, but hopefully someday. Until then we hope that Keba can live out the rest of her life happy and relaxed.
Here is a picture taken on the day of the move, both with winter coats and watching the new horses over the fence

Stuart that brought a tear to my eye. How lovely that they have adapted ok and that the move seems to have brought a new lease of life to Keba. My friend recently moved her 25yr old boy to my yard and it was lovely to see him showing off to all the other horses, he looked young again .
Hope all stays well with you and your horses, beautiful picture .

Pastures new is a positive thing! Sometimes difficult times force us to move on, but we get new inspiration and new energy from accepting what has to happen and from the new places we arrive at. It sounds like you and your lovely horses have just the right attitude and are going to make this a really happy place. What a lovely story! Best of luck to you all... |

By the look of the picture they are already settling well. Warms the heart to hear that Keba is top dog again bless her!! Hope they continue to enjoy their new home and I am sure you too will soon adapt to the slightly earlier routine and the water tests favourable for you.

Thanks everyone for your best wishes.
Went to see the girls this morning to find Gyp in with them. The two girls came running over to tell me as if I hadn't noticed I called for assistance and we managed to get gyp back in her side of the electric fence.charge seems to be going to the earth rod ,will check later. dont know if it is due to heavy dew.
They are fine and settled ,enjoying today with their rugs off, enough excitment for one day me thinks
