Just wondered, as the foaling season takes off, if anyone else who doesn't have the privilege of watching their own foals arrive has ever sat looking at the foaling cams on the Net?
I kept an eye on one mare last year at a stud in the US, Sonesta Farms, and was delighted to see she was looking ready for the event one evening ~ VERY imminent ~ so I went to get a cup of tea...came back and THERE IT WAS ~ a big foal had arrived in the time it took to dunk a tea bag!!!
I was lucky enough to watch the very rapid arrival of another foal to a beautiful black mare a day later and another foal to a quarter horse at another stud a week after that!
I'm not the geeky sort who stays glued to the screen for hours...but the foaling cams made addictive viewing last season.
Anyone else ever taken a look?
What do you make of this?
It's a miraculous thing to witness and a joyful one when things go well.
Thing is, the US is a bit addicted to live "real life" footage of all manner of events....what if something went wrong?
Opinions and experiences, anyone?

What a fascinating concept - never thought of that. Now I'll NEVER get anyhting done Good point about the what if though...... are these web cams real time or edited? If real time, I guess there is always a risk of seeing something upsetting. At least we can switch off, pity the poor owners going through it can't. I'm too much of a softy and need a happy ending, but I will be checking the search engines anyway....

Hi Heather
This is the Sonesta Farms foal cam addy
http://www.sonestafarms.com/cam.htm
And this is a list of loads of others! Some Arabians and a host of different others including Miniatures!!
http://www.foalcams.com/menu.htm
As you pointed out, I have mixed feelings ~ I think there is a short delay on most ~ just in case of a problem ~ but essentially, it's real time ~ apart from the clips of the arrivals of last year's foals.
When all goes well, it seems miraculous to be sitting here, so far away and watching a foal arrive!
It does worry me, however, that there could be the odd occasion that you'd prefer not to witness.
Still most of the time you sit there watching a mare lazily nibbling and doing not a lot else!
In the end, every time, after hours of chewing and dozing, she shifts her weight or raises her tail you have an adrenalin rush!!

Well, hey, I may just set up my own cam in 2005...as I'm seriously considering taking up the offer to introduce Milly to my friend's stallion, a Procyon son...and just "growing my own" ArabxWelsh!
Far less hassle headaches and heartaches than many other options .
Never mind if I have to wait five years from now to do something ridden with him or her ~ and that's if I didn't break the youngster to driving like her versatile Mum. Whatever, I'll have the baby I've always wanted.
~and more than likely, considering the dominant colours of both Mum and Dad's lines, a grey, too!
Spring approaches and I'd head for a foaling date neaxt year that meant the baby would arrive as the weather was warm and kind to foals.
Milly had a beautiful daughter a couple of years back on May 9th ~ our National Day ~ Liberation Day, in Jersey, and was such a great Mum, seems a wonderful idea to let her have another ~ I'd love to watch the miracle all over again!
If you've never seen her ~ Milly's babe is on her site.
