Hi all, I'm sure most of you will remember the dreadful incident last year regarding my friend's Andalusian colt. It was left in the hands of the breeder and she allowed some lunatic to brand it. He had never branded anything before and after practising on a piece of wood, proceeded to hot brand the colt, leaving him with horrific burns and subsequently scarred for life!!! The help I now need is such. A member of AL posted a picture of her horse taken 3 days after branding. I could urgently do with a copy of this picture as there is now a court case pending. It would be most useful to show how a brand SHOULD look when done in the hands of a competent person. I have tried to find the original thread I posted with out any joy!! I don't know if they are stored somewhere on file. Perhaps Paula or Shaun could kindly let me know on that one. In the meantime, if the lady with that picture could kindly contact me I would be most grateful. Annsunnybankstud@aol.com Many thanks Annx

Hi Zan, WOW! How clever of you to find it so quickly. I have now saved it so it should be safe. I would be most interested if you have any further info that you feel may be of help to me. Hot Branding is apparantly legal in the UK so I have hit a few "brick walls" with certain welfare organizations. The whole horrific story now needs to be told to a judge for his consideration. Thanks again Zan. You're a pal! Annx |

Hi Lynn, Thanks for your good wishes. The colt as I said is permenantly scarred. I would love to post a picture of how it looks now but I don't feel it would be wise. I have had a couple of "suspicious" emails asking for recent pics of the scarring. This was before I put this post on. When I asked them to identify themselves I did not get a reply!! I just need to play my cards close to my chest but promise I will post the full SP when the time is right. Thanks again Annx |

Don't think I can be of any help with your case, but good luck. The Scottish Executive are looking at mutilation procedures on animals, including farm animals and tail docking of dogs. I will pass on the photo of the badly done branding in the hope that a tightening of restrictions and procedures for hot branding will result---if that is okay with you? Might be worth finding somone at Westminster to bring it to their attention when they look at the same thing. |

Ann be careful that the views aired on that conversation on AL don't act against your court case. Sometimes opinion being bandied about like that can be seen to prejudice judgement. Show the thread's contents to your solicitor first in case there is anything that can thwart your claim. By all means download and save the picture you need but be wary of repeating everyone else's wrath and unsubstantiated comment in a court. |

Good luck with the case, I hope the colt is OK. This barbaric practise needs to be stopped.

You are welcome to use a photo of my Spanish mare with a correct hot brand (done in Spain)
Also was it me that posted a photo of my Lipizzaner stallion 3 days post branding? If so, then you are welcome to use that too.
There have been various research papers done on cattle comparing hot branding and freezebranding. To be honest there is not a great deal of choice berween the two methods - for healing cleanly and with less pain hot branding is preferable. For a slightly less painful initial brand then freezemarking is preferable, but with a more painful healing process.
I am sure I could find the references to those if required and it is helpful to your friend's case. (In the cases above all branding was carried out by a professional)
