Nothing Anna, I have left messages for various organisations but not one has called back......Looks like I might need to re-think and find another way to get this rotten practice of deliberately orphaning foals into the public domain and hopefully stopped.
Quite hard when the thoroughbred foals are owned by big money people who will not take to kindly to anyone interfering in their 'world'. Not that I am saying that ALL thoroughbred studs in the UK do this but there are definately SOME!!
If anything comes of it I can asssure you that A/Liners will be the first to know.
Thanks for asking..... |

Whilst this practice appears deplorable the hypocrisy of saying calves are different to foals stuns me. WHY!! In many countries horses are a foodsource and whilst I personally would not chose this way we need to remember that not all countries have the wealth of the UK and that therefore the horse like other livestock has to pay its way. Surely the living conditions of the animal should be paramount.
Most of you will eat meat, use leather tack and wear leather and more importantly use the veterinary advances that have in the main been funded by the bloodstock industry, unless you are prepared to give all these things up then it seems rather two faced to complain.

Yvonne, you are of course entitled to your opinion BUT most of us here have our horses as pets, NOT FOR EATING! (The difference between foals and calves) I also do not class myself as a hypocrite or two faced just because I eat beef and hate the way that some foals are being abused by some in the bloodstock industry!
Just because the bloodstock industry gives us veterinary advances it does not mean that they have the green light to abuse non-bloodstock foals!! And what the hell has wearing leather and having leather tack got to do with orphaned foals?
If you have no problem with people shooting foals or orphaning foals just so that some studs in the thoroughbred industry have a foster mare for their expensive foal that is up to you but I for one don't agree with it. |

I never said I agree with the practice just a certain acceptance of what is happening and the benefits that I have from it.
I just believe that all animals are equal and deserve the best care whilst they are on this earth and that to single one species out for special treatment is hypocritical.
I love my own animals as much as the next person and deplore cruelty in any form but I do wonder whether we should be looking closer to home and sorting out our own problems before tackling another breeds issues.
As has been said without names, facts, evidence this will be dubbed as an emotional hysteria by a group who are not involved rather than getting the coverage it deserves and coud well backfire against arabs and their owners.

I have the name and address of the couple that are breeding the cob mares and taking the babies away so they can 'rent the mares for cash' to various studs in the bloodstock industry. There was also an article in a local paper a couple of years ago about another local woman that does this. But for obvious reasons I can not name them on here.
This is not an 'Arab' thing or mass hysteria, it is something that is happening in the UK and from what I have seen, the USA. As a horse owner I do not feel that because I own pure bred arabs that I must ignore what goes on within the rest of the equine industry.
This forum is not exclusive to people who own just arabs, there are members that have commented within this topic that have had first hand knowledge of this practice going on withing the racing industry!
If I found out that this was happening within the Arab community I would be one of the first to bring it to light and see if there was anything I could do to stop it, same as I am trying to do now for the poor cob foals and their dams.
I'm just glad that the foals I breed have the happy experiences that nature intended by being bought up with their dam and not in a pen with/without company and being fed out of a bucket hanging on a gate. That's if they are one of the lucky ones that are not shot first!
I class myself as an animal lover and do not like to see any animal being mis-treated. However horses are a very big part of my life and have been for many years, which is why in my eyes they are entitled to be singled out for special treatment, if that means I am a hypocrite so be it! |

I totally disagree with orphaning foals, but Yvonne has a point. Calves are taken from their mums the minute after birth, if they are lucky they can get some colostrum. And these calfs are growing up on their own and the cows go back for milking, what should have been for the calves. Monique |

I do feel it is better to single out a species and do something about it than do nothing about anything. Hence the prevalence of dog/cat sanctuaries and rescues. When I became involved twnety years ago in stopping horses being exported live for slaughter I was constantly asked why I wasnt also involved in stopping ALL animals being exported. But I HAD to concentrate on horses because I love them so much. I dont feel Angel should have to justify herself. Just my opinion! |

I am vegan precisely because of the dairy industry and what the animals involved suffer. I get involved in any way and any campaign I can to raise public awareness, but because the perception is that humans have the right to do what they want to cattle to have an abundant supply of cheap milk for themselves it is a long slow road to change. Just because such abuse happens to one species is no reason to condone it happening to another, or not try to do something to stop the abuse to the other species---in the case of horses if there was more public awareness of this abuse, it might just make a few people stop and think about what goes on on dairy farms as well. The abuse of horses might just be a hook in to help the cows. More people identify with horses than with farm animals, because it suits them to blinker themselves to what happens to farm animals, so there is more chance of a campaign to stop this happening to horses than to cows succeeding. Therefore, lets try to stop it In my case, it isn't instead of, but as well as. |
