I am so ANGRY!!!!
Today my OH went to a small yard that has around 9 mares due to foal, one of which had foaled yesterday.
It transpires that the mare was being taken away today to be a foster mum for a bloody racehorse foal and her own poor foal was being shipped to another yard to be raised by bucket!!!!
I can not explain how angry I was when my other half called to tell me, he could not believe what this 'employee' was telling him.
Apparently they earn sh#t loads of money by 'renting' the mares out to the Racing Industry and their mares get looked after like queens for 6 months.
I feel absolutely sick and wondered if anyone has any ideas on how we might stop this disgusting business of taking mares from their foals that are less than 24 hours old just to earn money.

This is a situation I have brought to attention on other forums that I am a member of. I try to raise the issue and raise awareness, unfortunatly i am rarely believed.
I work in the Racing Breeding industry as does my OH . We know this goes on and also are disgusted by it. I have in fact composed a letter today to the Racing Post to highlight this issue which is just 'swept under the carpet' in the industry. Everyone in the industry knows it goes on but no-one mentions it. This is so openly accepted that if you go on to Darley kids website ( i don't know how to do links but i think it is darleykids.com)they show pictures of their orphaned foal and his coloured cob mother. They also say that there are lots of mares like her ready to help orphans. What they do not mention is how the mare has milk for her TB 'foal' and what happens to her own foal.
angel2002 you say that the mare that your OH heard about had her foal taken to be raised by bucket; I would be surprised, most TB studs shoot the foals, there is too much effort in bucket rearing an orphan. Too many man hours would be spent on rearing a 'worthless' animal. I have spoken to vets that have shot hours old foals who's mothers were needed elsewhere.
On the stud my OH works at a foster mare was needed as the TB mother died whilst at stud in Newmarket, a welsh-type pony mare was used, her foals skin was 'avaliable if needed'......All for £1000 and the mare re-covered, by anything.
What I think is the most apalling thing in this horrendous situation is the reason the foals need foster mothers in the first place, some of the foals are orphans, the other are merely being put on a foster mare as their own mother is to be covered abroad (usually USA) and the foal is too young to go straight away for an early covering date and/or the foal is too valuable to fly.This is absolutely disgusting, the trauma suffered by all concerned must be awful.
Big TB studs keep their own mares for this, we were approached by one to sell our big 15.2 traditional cob mare for this practice. Needless to say we declined!
I truly do not know what to do about this practice, I am fairly sure my letter to the racing press will not be printed, the Racing Post is largely owned by one of the largest stud owners in Europe, who also has a large band of 'foster' mares (his stud use Shire mares).

| This is horrendous...I am a foal milk holder for the National Foaling Bank, and I am stunned that this practice is allowed to flourish. This is mainly due to the TB industry not accepting foals concieved by AI, and if this changes..then mares can be covered by foreign stallions without having to risk their foals/have their foals removed for them to be covered. It is a case of monstrous stupidity. |

I've recently heard about this as someone I know of (who works in racing) got a couple of foals from one of these places last year. I was told it was one of the big studs.
I think the lucky foals get sold off cheap but I guess unless your in the industry you probably wouldn't get to hear about them, as I'm sure they wouldn't like too many people to know what goes on behind the scenes. The foal I've seen is a lovely chunky type with feather, could well be from a shire mare as mentioned by Helen.

We knew that there must be other people that knew about this. The foal concerned was send to a different non-racing yard to be reared by bucket, the owner also breeds mares, takes the foals away, sends the mares off as foster mares and kept the foals herself. Looks like she is now in 'business' with the other people now.
The place my OH had to go to today has about 9 coloured cob mares ALL due to foal and his wife grinned when she said she earned loads of money!!!! Aparently cob mares make the best foster mums. What a BITCH!!
I am sure I can find out who in the industry is best to talk to about this. Do any of you think a petition will do any good?
What I find surprising is that 82 people have read this but only 4 people have responded????? Is this not something we should all be concerned about even if the babies are not Arabs? |

I am absolutely gobsmacked! Like I said before, I've never heard about this, but obviously it goes on, and a lot by the sound of it. Something needs doing about this, it's appalling.

Come on people surely some of you 101 that have read this have got some ideas what we can do to save these babies from having their mums taken away before they are 24 hours old?
There must be something we can do to stop these people earning money from what I class as sheer cruelty! |

Angel it really is horrendous I agree. I think that the racehorse industry is like greyhound racing, the animals are just a commodity and matter not one jot to many of the people involved in it as shown by that guy who shot over 10,000 unwanted greyhounds. I'm not sure what on earth can be done except perhaps to contact one of the papers? Maybe Roseanne will see this and she may have some idea of who to speak to? Sorry that I can't be more helpful than that but I totally understand your anger.

Oh my god, just read this...I will forward on to a journalist friend of mine...don't know if it will do any good (seem to remember his boss at the Telegraph is an animal enthusiast) so hopefully they can do something...

| To be honest Jen, as a breeder myself I have thought about nothing other than what that poor foal and of coure her mum must have gone through today. I think of how lucky my babies are to be with their mum until weaning at 6 months. |

Thanks Jilly, I think that would be a good start. Perhaps I can see if Admin could help with an on-line version that could be printed off when we know who to send it too?
Got to go know, bedtime as up early to do my girls before work. I will reply to any other posts tomorrow.

Right, he's actually at the Daily Express tonight and is going to read through this post fully and talk to the News Editor about it now. He says that the express are very animal orientated so let hope he can swing something.......

That's terrible. I would think making it public knowledge would be the way to start the ball rolling. What about a letter to "Horse and Hound"? I know they cover racing and racehorse breeding but regularly have articles and news items about all sorts of equines...
I had no idea this went on - often hear appeals for foster mares needed on "The Morning Line" - these (I assume) are all genuine cases of the mare sadly dying and certainly no suggestion of any malpractice. Why not contact Channel 4 Racing and get John McQuirik etc on the case...
Is there NO end to the sickening things that go on in this world to satisfy the GREED of people???? |
