Nick we were only up for one night, she was kind to us, waxed up, just started to drip milk, then pop, all in one night.
Very friendly foal, much to mums anger....she is a bit foal proud for first few days. We have to pretend not to notice she has a foal! They are so funny!
Good bottle of wine tonight, and an early night. This is a much better xmas pressey than a puppy....Filly is called Sweet Pea...her pet name! can't think of proper name yet.

Foal's first day out today.......in the frozen sand schoolat least it was safe. They trotted up and down for quite a while, foals legs are not with her just yet!! it is always such a lovely site, we never tire of wasting the day away watching. She is definitely going to be grey, already got spectacles coming We had a good cuddle today, helping her to follow mum, her coat is like velvet.
We have two infra red lamps in the stable, mum hates the foal rug, so it's our only way to cope with the cold....never ever again will we have such an early foal, it was not by choice as Essteem had to go home during Febuary last year. I think Pat Hannay had the last covering by him. Nothing can beat putting a mare and foal out in a paddock of fresh grass. Seeing them snooze in the sun.....we have a long wait for that!

Congrats on the filly Sue - my mare foaled with a filly as well early Sunday morning - think mine and claires mares waited for the coldest night of the year so far
Also I wanted to know what size infra red lamps you've got because I'm after one as well - it's not too bad because my mare is quite happy for foalie to wear her pyjamas but I have another two mares to foal yet.

Hi Sally
Thanks for your good wishes.
We use the type of Infra Red lamps that you would find in use with young poultry. They are obviously suspended high in the stable in their housings so that the mares cannot hit them. The lamps that we use are rated at 250 Watt, and we use the clear type rather than the Red colour ones as this allows us to illuminate the stables for the CCTV without having the main lights on. You should be able to get them easily from the local agricultural suppliers, or where you get your feed.
We are usually very mild in this part of the country, and so 1 lamp in each of the foaling boxes is usually enough. Even without the top doors closed, the stables get nice and cosy. We have used 2 lamps with this foal as it is very early in the year, and she is in a very large stable.
By the way, Susan's report of having put mum and foal out in a "frozen" sand school should be qualified. There was only a very thin crust on the top of the sand, which broke as soon as you stepped on it !
