Hi
I am hoping there is someone out there that can help me understand my mares pedigree, I have worked out that she is seglawis/keheilan strains and that she is Crabbet/Polish/US but thats all. I am not sure how to do the female tail line is it just looking at the dam and going back the previous dams Also what is line breeding And how do I work out the families As I don't know the horses in the pedigree could someone tell me what the breeding was use for endurance, showing, racing or abit of everything Also I would like to know how good is the pedigree I know I have asked alot of questions but I am total novice and any help will be much appreciated.
Christine

Your mare is Crabbet, Old English, Polish and Egyptian!
(3 x Polish lines through Karramba (x2) and Grojec, Egyptian through The Shah)
The tail female is just the very bottom line of the pedigree taken as far back as you can - so your mare goes right back to Rodania imported by the Blunts of Crabbet Park in 1881 and who died in 1889, her strain is given as keheilet ajuz. (So the tail female line is always the dam's dam's dam as far back as you can go)
The strain is always taken from the tail female line, and if the sire and dam both have tail female lines to the same strain name, they are said to be 'pure in the strain'
Line breeding is breeding to close relations but not necessarily son to dam or brother to sister matings. There is a cynical saying amongst horse breeders that when it works it is line breeding, if it doesn't, it is inbreeding! All the early Crabbet horses are heavily line/inbred, it is usd to fix a characteristic or type or to preserve a rare bloodline.
The horses in your mare's pedigree have been ridden and show horses -she has what is really an English domestic pedigree as it is a blend of many different types.
She should be a good all-round riding type. |

I am biased - but if I wanted a general riding horse I would look towards a nice Crabbet/Old English type. They generally have a good set of legs, as do a lot of the Polish horses.
Although the best thing you can do is chose a stallion who complements your mare, if she is inclined to be long backed, chose a stallion with a more compact back. If she has long cannons, chose a stallion with nice short ones. Above all select one with a fantastic temperament. |
