Anyone can get news onto the BBC - as long as it's considered important enough. You just have to find out the number from the website or directory inquiries (free service on the BT website) and ask for the newsroom. Then tell them what's happened, what's gone, when, where, how much it was worth and if there's a reward and they may well use it. They're looking for local stories for bulletins every hour of the day, so your bit could be useful, not least in getting the stuff back. You can also email them - ask for the newsroom email address and write it down for them.
