I've had word that Patricia Leitch who wrote the Shantih books is not very well - she's had a bad fall and has had to move into hospital for a while. She's very down and needs cheering up. She apparently can't believe that people still read and appreciate her books.

I know that she has infected many people with incurable arabitis through her books, and I thought it might be nice to have a thread for her, saying what her books mean to you. A friend of mine will then print this thread off and take it to her.

Oh and if anyone wants to send her a card, her address for now is:

What a lovely idea.
The Jinny at Finmory books were definitely the inspiration for my arabitis 30 years later I am still obsessed by chestnut arabs with white legs and faces, and I don't want to be cured!
Sending best wishes to Miss Leitch, get well soon and thank you for lighting the fire inside me.

Crikey I think most people on here have read her wonderful books and there is one girl who has recently bought herself her very own Shantih (having a senior moment cause can't remember her name!) I've still got all my Jinny books and they are the only ones i've not given to the children who ride my ponies to read yet although i will cause I want them to have arabs later. Anyway best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Oh Judith you don't know what you've missed. They are about a chestunt arab mare originally a circus horse who has been ill treated called Yasmin the killer horse and the Jinny see's her at the circus and then by coincidence the circus lorry crashes on the scottish highlands where Jinny lives and the arab escapes to live wild on the moors where eventually Jinny catches her and tames her and then they have lots of adventures together in a nutshell!!

I have spent many happy hours in the company of Ginny and Shantih, I also still have a full set although my original For Love of a Horse is missing - but I have got a copy with Ginny standing next to Shantih with her arms around her nack. I think the other copy I had featured a horse with a much more dished head....sorry wandering off now. I'm now trying to decide which is my favourite book - veering between The Magic Pony because I loved Easter sooo much and Night of the Red Horse......just can't decide.

Thank you Patricia Leitch for introducing me to two great loves in my life - Arabs and reading.

OOh if people are in contact with Patricia perhaps they can they find out who the original arab was on the books. We know the second lot of pictures was Prince of Orange but I don't think anyone ever discovered who the original horse was although it's been discussed lots of times on here. To me that horse will always be the Shantih I imagine. I think For Love of a Horse is my favourite followed by Devil to Ride.

I loved and still love those books so much - i was thinking the other day that i might re read my collection again - that would be about the 4th time they never get old or boring!!! The most amazing of andventures on the most amazing Chestnut Arabain mare - although when i met The Prince of Ornage and was told he was the chestnut 'mare' Shantih on the front cover of the books it did take that away from me - Still you can imagine what an amazing Arabian Shantih really is... Get well soon Parricia

Oh No! I hope she feels better soon. I will def write to her. Her books were the reason for me really loving Arabs and chestnut mares. I started reading them at 11. I loved her books so much, more than anything I can ever remember. Now at the age of 26 my dream mare arrived. I searched for the right one and I have had to name her Shantih, she means so much. I feel very emotional

My Shantih

Being bolted with like the real Shantih did from time to time!!

Shantih doing something like the pose on the original Devil to ride.

Sorry got carried away!

I think my fave was For love of a horse and I found the wolf one and the starnge walker and the red horse quite scary when I was young! I re read them for about the 8th time when I was looking for Shantih to get me in the mood!

get well soon!!!
I grew up with the shantih books and have just bought some more at the grand old age of 22. i always wanted my very own shantih and got one at last in 2006, although he is boy version- he looks like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JINNY-3-THE-SUMMER-RIDERS-Patrica-Leitch-PB-book-pony_W0QQitemZ280053776893QQihZ018QQcategoryZ29179QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

it was reading about jinny and shantih that got me stuck on the arab horse in the first place

I have my very own 'Shantih' as well - Dulciya is my chestnut arab mare with a white face and 4 white socks. I have only just re-read Devil to Ride!!
I hope Patricia gets better very soon - she started my childhood dreams of having an arab as well. When Dulcie and I are off exploring the coutryside I often think about those wonderful adventures she wrote
