Hi all,
Does anyone know of any photos of this stallion? I was told he died quite young - perhaps someone with access to database could check how many foals he had? Was he ever shown? if so, there might be photos of him somewhere. His dam is also very difficult to find photos of. If any of you fellow arabitis sufferers have come across one, I'd be thrilled to see it.

Thanks Lynn,
It looks like he only had one breeding season, then. Too bad - it seems he could have done a lot of good if he'd had the chance. Oran is such a good influence in a pedigree IMO.
So if he was shown it was probably in '63 or '64. My small collection of AHS News doesn't go back further than '67. Does anyone have issues from 63-64?
I knew about Susannah as she is in my mare's pedigree, but I have never seen anything about Tobruk or Sollum. Any photos, info, etc?
What about Rissada (Bright Shadow x Risseefa)? Has anyone ever seen any pics?
Any help greatly appreciated
Anne

I visited the stud where Tobruk was MANY years ago - they had a small number of Arabs and I seem to remember a mare of Russian breeding which was quite rare in those days. The stud was on the edge of Dartmoor (I think). I probably still have his stud card (as I usually keep things like that - but it will be buried deep in the office somewhere!). They were lovely people and took the time and trouble to talk at length with me even though I was only an Arab obsessed teenager and not in the market for buying (or even photographing at the time!) |

Sollum used to stand at stud with Daphne Cocksedge near Carmarthen. He had many offspring, probably the best known was the part bred Wyere Lad who I believe won the Red Dragon twice and competed very successfully over a number of years, Mandy |

Wow - Celtic Shadow is gorgeous!! What a wonderful write-up on the website too! I loved reading about her horses.
Sollum sounds fascinating - do you guys think there's a photo somewhere out there?
Marilyn, thanks for sharing your memory of Tobruk's stud - do you remember anything about himself? Have you ever seen any photos? Oh - and on another note - I sent you an email (perhaps a month ago?) about Faery Rose. Did you ever receive it?

Just to add I've seen a photo recently of Margaret & Wyeres Lad P.B.A.R.(50%)after winning in Endurance...will see if I can find it again..... Sollum had three foals due in 1977, to mares at Tan-y-Coed Stud, they were Arthusa, Luka, Rushmere's Ophelia.

FAO Anfi Sadly I can't remember much about Tobruk - most Arabs around that time were of the same type - not the variations we see today - and I was just learning and ALL Arabs seemed so beautiful at the time!! He was a light dapple grey. I did get your email but I have quite a list of photos to look up... |

Hi Marilyn,
That's ok - I have managed to find a couple of photos of her so it is not urgent. Whenever you get around to it is perfectly ok I can imagine you get swamped with requests.
Sue, it would be wonderful to see some get of Sollum - purebreds and part breds. Thanks for looking!

Thank you Lynn, its so good to see that these lines have bred on. I must say that when I look at Celtic Shadow, I see a lot of Oran in him - is that just me?
Lynn - could I ask a big favour? Could you look up Susannah for me in the database? She is from 1965, by Sudeir and out of Ghayran and I would love to see how many foals she had. Allbreeds has her down for eight, but there might be more. Thanks in advance

Thanks Lynn - I knew I could count on you
I make it 14 foals - that is still a lot! She was one of the best brood mares at Horsey Island - I didn't know that she was even bred to Balaton! I know Faery Snow went on to produce Faery Rose, BNC, and Samirha was exported to Dk where she was dam and granddam of numerous champions. Kaspian sired some good stock - among them, Emba who was also exported to Dk. I put a photo of him up on allbreeds, but if anyone has more, I would love to see them. Silviar I'm pretty sure went to Dk as well to become a broodmare. Suda, I think stayed at Horsey Island as a broodmare - allbreeds lists 7 foals - all fillies!! there are probably more. It looks as if there is an error on allbreeds though - it lists two offspring that are both called Somalia - one by Naslednik and one by Nasmeshnik. Given the fact that Nasmeshnik was on Horsey Island and Naslednik at Tersk, I would think that the first one is not right. On the other hand, Naslednik was still alive in 77 when the foal was born. Can anyone shed any light on this? It would be nice to have the false entry erased from allbreeds. Does any of you guys know of Susannah get or grandget who did well in the showring or in riding disciplines?
Thank you so much for your input

Sorry to keep you waiting folks, This was Margaret Wilkes on Wyere Lad at, it says Red Dragon 1986, but he also gets a mention at The Black Mountain Ride 1986, said to be the toughest ride tackled by many... with only three Bronze Medals Awarded.( I need to read the whole article to make sure I've got it right.so will come back( had a job to remember where the posting was...Sudeir)
Margaret Wilkes still lives in West Wales and recently bought another horse (pure bred) from a pal of mine. and I am sure if you wanted to chase more, better pic of this horse the person to contact for around that time, would be Peter Orr in New Zealand..he has a web site or I'll ask my pal to ask her what photo's she has of Wyere Lad.
Some of the mares listed as having progeny by this Stallion, were located in West Wales at the time, two mentioned were at Popard Stud.
Just spotted a pic of Nasmeshnik at Horsey,,tell me if you have not seen it. |

Hi Sue,
Thanks a lot for the pic and info - so great to see some results and working horses other than from the show ring. Anything else you have on any of the other horses mentioned would be great as well
On which website did you see a photo of Nasmeshnik? I think the only website I've seen is the http://www.horseit.com/heritagecoaststud/index.htm and they don't have purebreds - I have not seen a pic of Nasmeshnik there.

Bit more info for you, Margaret (Wilkes) Glover represented Britain in both America & Italy around the years mentioned above on her horse Wyere Lad,I now have her telephone number if you want me to ask in case she has better pictures of Lad and the sire Sollum, who was a local stallion in West Wales...
Nasmeshnik pic above is in AHS No.34 .1972 pg.107 with Horsey Addand also a pic of him on allbreedspedigree and the other Tersk stallion Naslednik(not bred the same way) gets a mention in an article I'm reading written by Jane Kadri after a visit to Tersk in 1986.(AHS No.67.1986.pg.56.) |

Thank you, Sue!!
I do know that photo of Nasmeshnik - I have collected a few photos of him, but they are hard to come by and are not really what I'd call promotional pics - this one certainly isn't The two best of him are probably the one where he rears and the one where he is ridden (colour). Would love to see the article, but I don't have that issue of AHS News.
Please, if anyone has more info about Sudeir or Susannah progeny, keep posting it - any information is welcome.

Hi Annie, No problem me getting you a copy of the Jane Kadri Tersk article, remembering and finding it under all my stuff, keep reminding me,
and I've come accross another horse,by Sollum and racing, and a picture of Sollum with his owner and his collie dog in wales, towards the end of his life, must try and find that again...remind me... and Wyre Lad was named after the river in West Wales...This horse did very well for the British Team in Endurance in Italy & America...he's buried at the bottom of Margarets garden, and The Black Mountain ride was on of the toughest rides about in those days, went over the top of the Black Mountains in the Llantony Valley area...There might be other folks on these lines that took part and might remember Margaret & her Lad...
