HI My foal is now 7 months old, (she has 4 black hoofs don't know if that makes any difference!.) When she was about 2 months old her back nearside hoof split in a couple of places, the splits went about 1/4 the way up, curled and then broke off. They never seemed to bother her, I just put it down to the ground being so hard. She has her feet trimmed regular and has been fine up till now.
This week her hoof has two more small cracks in it. Can you give me any advice, is this common, or could it be she's lacking in something, this time i know its not hard ground causing the problem.
Thank You Kerry

what has your farrier said about this? he would be the 1st person to go to regarding the hoof. otherwise maybe a nutritional deficiency of some sort? they say black horn is stronger than pale horn but im not sure how true this is |

When I need advice I tend to go to Nic Barker at www.barefoothorses.co.uk. If you email her, she always responds quickly and her advice has always been good. Don't be scared that it's a BAREFOOT website - she won't try to convert you. She knows hooves though. |
