Can anyone advise how to get a rather sparse, but very long mane to look better? My boy rubbed half his mane off a few years ago (or rather a full neck rug did!) so it has been left to grow. Now the whole mane is really long (well below the underside of the neck) but is really straggly and looks thin and rather unattractive, particularly on the lower end of the neck. I am not really sure how to make it look better as pulling is a no-no and cutting (even with 'thinning' blades) still gives it a very straight look. What do all you folks that show and have presentable horses do?

Well I had this problem and I did take the scissors to it and it did look awful BUT it now looks much less straggly and has grown back down and it didn't actually take that long. Of course we're now back to that time of year when it will all get rubbed off again so will be back to square one! |

I use a painless pulling /thinning comb called a Solo. its just a blade really. I do the mare I rides ' mane quite short as its thick and heavy and annoys her when hacking and the other mare with the thin stragly mane I just shorten so its not like rats tails. I dont show, its a shame about the mane which is naturally thick and was very long and beautiful when i bought the mare. she just finds it heavy and annoying when being ridden, gets a bit sweaty under it and starts head tossing, once it was trimmed radically she stopped this. |
