I was enjoying the lovely pic from hoys when a memeber mentioned the mounting block that the judge was using then another member commented on how 'AMATEURISH'it was!!!!!
The mounting block is for the health and saftey of the horse, steward and the judge it is not AMATERURISH.

I agree. I made the point about the health of the horse(re back and twisted tree on saddle) in the thread. Watching some people haul themselves up from the ground incorrectly makes me cringe---that is amateurish. |

I think it is only considerate for the horses to use a mounting block, not amateurish.
Plus, it is pretty difficult to mount from the ground in tight jodhpurs and long boots - I wouldn't want to be doing it several times in an hour! |

I find it amazing how people seem to be so opinionated about things they have not done.... Firstly using a mounting block is NOT amateurish it is PROFESSIONAL....common sense come into mind..secondly leg ups from stewards are becoming less and less, if they get injured they may sue the shows or societies, plus it is not good to be lifting in that manner repeatedly...Thirdly using a mounting block is a very tidy way of mounting, without too much strain to the horse or rider, this helps to give the horse a stress free experience and helps the judge to conserve energy so that they may do their job to the best of their ability...It seems to me that as a judge you can't do right for doing wrong.. |

Can i add my opinion as well! - and this is my "personal" opinion!!!
The way i see it, if a horse stands quietly to be mounted from a box, then it is obviously relatively "happy" to allow the judge to mount, so it does play a considerable part in ensuring that horses are "ready" for the judge ride.
Fiona - I agree - there are far too many people that are very quick to critise judges and the whole procedure, that dont either help or take part (let alone get involved!)
For anyone that doesn't know - each and every AHS judge puts an awful lot of time, effort & personal money into their "judging" role. from the moment they start their "training" when they have to pay for all the courses, and continuing through their career, when ALL THEY ARE EVER PAID ARE EXPENSES! - i.e. Mileage. (and many dont even claim that!)
So please when you are "knocking" them remember they have probably drove many miles (having first done their own horses at home) - given up the chance to show their own horses, stood in the pouring rain for many hours, got terrible stains on their breeches from whatever Daisy has cleaned her saddle with, got Oil & Makeup all over their new jacket (bought because last years stains wont come out!), and still had a kind word for each and every competitor.
When i was young (not that long ago!) we were taught to "respect" and admire judges! - please remember they give there time "freely" and without them there literally would be no show!
As a society the AHS are keen to recruit new Ridden Judges, so lets not make people think they are jumping into a "lion pit" where they will be pulled apart for everything they do. - lets respect them for doing a smashing job (or if you think you could do better - well there is a Prospective Judges Identifier at Rodbaston on 21st Oct - book a place!)

From a Steward's point of view I would welcome a Mounting Block to be used for other classes (non Arab). I steward at a County Show for the Cobs & Coloureds and the first time the Judge informed me she didn't approve of Ladies legging up and her husband would do it. This year a well known professional was pulled in top (and yes he deserved to be there!)and he officiated for the top half of the line up until a male groom offered to do the rest. When it came to the coloureds it was left to the Stewards. Fortunately I am blessed with a Colleague who is half my age, fit and used to throwing up riders on to hunters. I am perfectly capable of doing the job having been well trained with 2 children who are now 22yrs 5'10" and 19yrs 6'1", but out of choice when in my "best clothes" with the obligatory hat carrying clipboards, catalogues, pens etc especially in the rain, if a Mounting Block was used I would be grateful.
I went to HOYS for the 1st time and I was very impressed with the Arab Class Judging. Time was of the essence and yet both Judges never looked hurried and gave every competitor a chance to "show" their horse whether in the Conformation Section or being expertly ridden by Joanne Lowe. |
