I think, in an ideal world we would all home these horses. If we had the money we would have them taken straight to our safe fields. Along with all the other animals who suffer to amuse us.................... in an ideal world. |

I agree with Debbie on this one. Although it is disgusting, we have to accept that it does go on and we can do nothing to change it. There is too much money involved. The only positive thing to come out of it is that at least the majority of these animals do not end up in rescue centres or old and mistreated. They never get the chance Nicky |

This report is truly heartbreaking and i wish there were something we could do. There's so much breeding going on and so many unwanted horses and ponies, its awful. With winter coming up fast there will be so many poor and neglected horses going through the auctions and the meat man will be lurking in the shadows. I do so wish i could win the lottery and create my own "Follyfoot". Those poor young thoroughbreds must be absolutely terrified when they smell that stench of death, oh how awful! |

yes i agree also we unfortunatly dont live in an ideal world , theres not enough money or people to save that many , but i think that the racing board should put a lot more in trying to rehab these horses to find good homes , at least they suffer no more |

My first horse was one of these, unfortunate animals, My beloved Beech Dale.
I would give anything to have her back, I had her at 5 and lost her at 23. These horses have so much to offer if you have the understanding, time, and ofcourse a horse that is still trainable. My girl was.
I tried and tried to find another when she retired, but smaller, due to my age, I never did, and this is the reason why I have arabs now.
I really couldnt choose which breed I prefer, if I was pushed, I have been blessed with the best of both breeds.

This is such a sad situation, I agree that racing with its multi millions should put some money into the rehab of some of these horses, I hate the idea of young horses being slaughtered without a chance, on the other hand these horses in the wrong hands often lead a miserable life, I too have had 2 ex racers one was a sweety and I did everything with him , the second was a really difficult character, who I kept til his death at 18, in an ideal world !!!!!! It's not enough to say that there isn't enough money to save these horses. It needs a different mind set and responsible horse ownership across the board extending even into racing----if the horse might prove surplus to requirements and no rehab solution is available it shouldn't be bred. It's not just lack of money that is the problem---it is the mind set that sees horses as commodities and not sentient beings.I understand the same fate befalls race horses belonging to the Queen---it can hardly be lack of money or room to keep them in her case. |

hi zan, i meant theres not enough money in the rescue and rehab side not owners eg queen , i think even the queen and all other owners should put money into rehab for these unwanted ir retirement homes were they deserve a good life after putting so much in to racing for there owners , not discarded like they are , its awfull what they do and youngsters that have never had a chance , if they scaled down breeding left the youngsters till they were mature enough to carry people they would not have so many breakdowns , i deplore this side of horse owner ship . |

hi
This is very sad. i also agree with debbie. having worked in the Racing Industry i saw this quite often that when the horses are finished with for whatever reason they were to go to the meat man but was offered to us for £500 each. a few people bought the odd one and we would try to tell friends ect But there was also the ones that had problems that to be fair would be more kinder to the horse to be put to sleep but that kinder option was not the case it was always just the talk of the meat man and god that made me angry. but there was the many good and innocent cases that wernt that lucky. Thankfully i never witnessed a horse actually going off but having to see them everyday knowing what was ahead of them really hurt.i always went out my way to spoil them for the time they were with us. it was always the case of Money and Space as you cant take them all.

I personally think that the Uk jockey club should write into the contracts of those that do make it to the track that they must be retired...the Hong kong JC have a clause, and every single racer in HK is retired to either Uk or Australia...
Also places like Greatwood, and the Thoroughbred Rehab centre cannot take every horse...they would love to, but they just cannot do this. Mum had an ex racer, Oggie, she bought him for £25 from the meat man.. he died a few years after I was born, and she still misses him. I wish that these horses weren't even bred, but, because some people put profit over welfare, we will always have a glut of Tb's...whereas the english native breeds, Fell, Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Eriskay ponies are on the endangered lists...stupid isn't it? |

I agree this report is heart breaking and I really wish more could be done to help these horses. I had the most wonderful thoroughbred called Tim, he sadly died after 10 years with us aged 21, he was an absolute treasure. He'd been brought in a deplorable state from a racing yard as a youngster, he had never made it onto a race course. He was one of the lucky one's that escaped the meat man.
Like other's have said nothing will be done, there's too much money involved, shame it doesn't go into helping these horses in their life after racing.
At least having class's like at HOYS for re-trained racehorses, if goes to show they have a life after racing and helps to promote ex-racehorses.

FINALLY someone has published this.
I speak to so many non-horsey people who are just oblivious to this and are truly shocked when they find out these horses are not loved and retired and so on but are simply put down if they are not good enough. Many don't even realise how many horses are seriously hurt in the sport.
I hate racing for this reason and refuse to support it in any way. It sickens me.
I have a TB mare who was bred for point to point but thankfully never made the grade. She's 25 now and the best horse I have EVER had, I could never replace her. She went to HOYS (15 years ago) and is such a fantastic horse.
I don't see why this is allowed - why is there not laws to protect these horses? |
