At odd times when I've hankered after owning a pure bred Arab(I'll get there one day, despite the Welshie, the Shetlands and the little horse of unknown origins...), my more seriously competitive friends, have asked me WHY I want one and have not been satisfied with the response that they are multi talented AND beautiful with it! In fact, although I appreciate the devotion of my friends to their Thoroughbreds, ID crosses, Warmbloods, Welsh cobs...etc, etc...I take exception to the dismissal of the Arab as being Besuty Queens and no more...as has been said so MANY times by those here who KNOW how versatile the breed is!
Anyway ~ to get to the point...
Yesterday I attended a local show at an indoor centre at which most of the classes were show jumping.
The classes were well attended and in the open jumping which rounded off my time there, there must have been twenty eight competitors on very different animals....and....one Arab...and who won with nearly four seconds to spare on the clock ~ despite the rider very nearly parting company with her STUNNINGLY gorgeous mount on an impossibly tight turn...you guessed it ~ the Arab!
He incidently, never once shied at the heavily Christmassy tinsel which adorned all the jumps in the same way many others did...and stood impeccably behaved during the presentation of the trophy and rosettes.
It's something of nothing and I know he may have had his work cut out for him in one or two of the later classes I never saw ~ but there are not that many Arab fans in my locality...I just felt rather good for the owner that the most equisite animal on the show ground also happened to be streets ahead of the opposition at that point when it came to performance!
I continue to be of the opinion that the incomparably intelligent and beautiful Arab can turn his hoof to just about anything!
But then, at least all here know that!

I used to know years ago, in my youth, a horse that I cannot remember for the life of me if he was a pure arab. He certainly looked it. But he could jump like a stag. Won everything in his way in the local shows around North Wales. He's name I can't remember neither.Gosh, I must be getting old and senile. I know his name had something to do with red Indians. The name of one of their tribes. Just a simple bit of useless information for you to ponder over.

Yes, I think the multiple talents of the Arab just aren't appreciated by the uninitiated!!
...by the way, don't worry about the onset of premature senility ~ I think the "condition" ~ and I can barely remember my own name sometimes~ is just a case of many tasks and little respite....but then, that's horses and they are what keep me SANE!!

Have to agree with Heather. My Anglo was introduced to a trotting pole when we first got her. She popped it at around 6 feet! Unfortunately for her, I don't do jumping so she'll just have to content herself with hacking, endurance and maybe dressage. |

"FLYING" is definitely what this boy did yesterday...could have left the earth's atmosphere if he'd put his mind to it!
What a pleasure to watch...not so sure the "passenger" aboard "Arabian Airlines" enjoyed the flight so much...but she had a HUGE grin on her face when they handed her the cup!
By the way, my little grey Welsh mare who rejoices in her part Arab ancestry, surprised us all when she, having retired from driving to start a new life under saddle at the beginning of this year, proved to have an ENORMOUS jump and to genuinely love every moment she spends flying round a course!
She never considers doing anything in moderation and when she finally stops cantering on the spot and running backwards in circles when faced with jumps, she launches herself off in a flying start and leaps over everything with miles to spare, all at the fastest possible speed...cornering at 45 degrees and scaring the pants off me and the kids!
Yes, I know she should be schooled...and so she is and at home she's fine...it's just that when she sees a show jumping ring...she forgets all her hard worked on manners and goes like the proverbial bat out of hell!
Mind you, she seldom knocks anything down ~ you just sit there, point and pray...and collect the ribbons!
Go Milly!

Who says Arabs carn't jump, how many times have I heard that old chestnut. My Stallion loves to jump, thought he had wings and a couple of my mares could have knocked the socks off some of the show jumpers that do the show circuit. No you are going to say that I am also going insane, I think I am as I am now a junior member at over fifty, well I never. susan. |

I had a mare by GG Maximo she is 75% Spanish and bred by Mrs Hedley. As a weanling she jumped over a high section of dry stone wall which was definately five foot high and she never touched the wall but easily cleared it. I was gobsmacked but happy she was unhurt.

Yes they do jump indeed. My arab gelding (currently up for sale) has won every one day event in his area (not with me I hasten to add). In fact, since I have had him (June this year) I have not jumped him once....obviously much to his annoyance as he decided to jump clean out of my school through the week from standstill - just a little over 4 1/2 foot. So yes they do jump, sometimes too well!!!!!!!! Wish I could say the same for me!!!

It's so good to hear of your "Flying Arabians"
It certainly proves a point I've debated hotly with my dear but not so Araby friends for years!!

i bought my purebred arab mare as a 7 year old, and she had never been taught to jump, because her owner said arabs don't jump. i bought her wanting to showjumping and eventing, and i could tell from how well she used her back end, and how much power she had she would make a good jumper. my parents didn't believe me she would make a good jumper, but agreed to buy her, now a year down the line we are competing in affiliated showjumping, and came 1st out of 35 in our first one day event at 2ft9'' in the summer. i must admit i don't see arabs jumping often though, and people are always so surprised my mare is a purebred and can jump so well. i would love to see more arabs jumping, because i think they have the perfect powerful hind quarters, and forward thinking attitude needed for a showjumper. |

I have to say that I have absolutely no idea where this "rumour" that Arabs don't jump ever came from ~ although enough uninformed folk I know seem to voice it from time to time.
It certainly can't be the way they are built as they are very well served in the hind quarters department and have incomparable natural "bounce" anyway!
I've mentioned Yarty, the beautiful grey Arab who belonged to a friend, well, he used to hunt right up until his death and had no problems with whatever he encountered. So much for Arabs not being good all rounders!

I'm sure i read somewhere that the French showjumping teams have a preference for Anglo arabs due to their natural ability. Could be wrong, or it may be a historical reference. |

Yes, I've heard this too. It isn't just the French who like the Anglo Arabs, either.I have a Polish friend, a one time Polish team member who is now a trainer over here. He said that Anglo's were highly thought of in Poland too for the same reason! He's recently made me mad with envy as apparently he's importing a grey Polish Arabian for a client. *drools* He said it with a great deal of pride... although he rudely told me once a couple of years ago that Arabs were a little too "poodley" for his taste!!!! Well, I told him he obviously had NO taste at all! It seems that since then, someone has educated him in the merits of the finest piece of heritage to be attributed to Poland ~ it's exceptionally beautiful Arabs!!
