I've just had my renewal note through and it has gone up from £120 to £200 is it just me or is that ridiculous. I phoned pet plan who I have been with for over ten years and they fobbed me off with some excuse about insurance tax! I've never made a claim and I am thoroughly p***ed off! So I rang NFU and got a quote of £178 and I'm sure I've got a voucher somewhere for £25 discount. Does anyone know if the AHS can supply a replacement voucher if I can't find it?

Insurance is a right pain. I've several friends who once their horse numbers increased, put the annual premiums in a 'pot' and sacked off the insurance companies. They went on the basis that the dearest vets bill plus statistical risk of that happening = one years premiums, so each extra year without major vets bills was a bonus.
This works if you do not intend to sell, even if they need to be retired early, as you would not get the loss of use that can be useful to the horse owner with fewer animals.
Others get a third party only insurance, which we should theoretically have through our AHS membership, or through BHS membership.
I had an insurance through 'Arab care' I think it was Crane Chandler in London but might have been taken over. They had a mix and match insurance, where you could pay a basic of 3 1/2 percent for death and add on. I used to get emergency surgery for £25, and stallion infertility for another £25, which was all the cover I needed. |

Hi Lisa,
I had a £25 discount voucher for NFU insurance earlier this year (it was inside one of the AHS mmagazines) but I think you had to use it before June 2003.

I agree with you Lisa, insurance is a nightmare.
We have cancelled insurance on several of our horses and I think we only have 3 insured now with the NFU (with 10 gg's, it starts getting horrendous). NFU also wanted to cancel our Employer's Liability Policy as 'we didn't have enough insurance', so my husband pointed out that our 4-wheel drive vehicle and the lorry were also insured with them, but another office - you should have heard the back-tracking! NFU are good, but you have to keep an eye on them.

I just found it irritating that I have paid an insurance premium to pet plan for over ten years and they would rather lose my custom than drop the price, does loyalty mean nothing!! I will not insure with them now on principal! |

I used to insure my horses with SEIB. Then earlier this year I received a renewal notice asking for £756.48 just for 2 Anglo yearling fillies. They were insured for £1500 each with just the basic cover for theft, death, etc. plus Vet fees. A third horse, my purebred broodmare, they wanted £322.66 in order to insure her. Needless to say I changed insurance companies.
